Friendship is a blessing. A "True Blue" or a best friend as I call it is a friend that is there through thick and thin, someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to share your most intimate thoughts and experiences with. They will walk the walk and talk the talk. A true friend is someone you can tell your deepest darkest secrets to and you know that the secret won't come back to haunt you. A friend is some one you can depend on, a shoulder to cry on.

Now there are many kinds of friends. There are casual friends, true blue friends, friends with benefits, weather-friends, animal friends, some people have Internet friends and your significant other can play dual friendship roles. I'm sure there are many other types I haven't mentioned here.

Somehow,I have always had a problem making friends. I have always been pretty much a loner all my life and walked to the beat of my own drum. I have had very few of what I would refer to as close friends, but let me tell you, I have never had to compete with guinea pigs for a friend. Yep, that's right, I did say guinea pigs, 3 of them. Sounds outrageous doesn't it.

This is what happened. First a little history. My friend,I'll call Ms. M, is about my same age, is divorced as I am, and does not have a man in her life, same as me. All my relatives live out of state, her family lives near her, but she is estranged from her family. I can't imagine why. We both work for the same employer but on different shifts on different days. She works Monday through Thursday and I work Friday through Sunday. We very rarely have days off at the same time. She likes to dine out as I do also. Ms. M was always complaining about not having any one to go out to eat with so when we would both have the same day off we would go out to eat on those days. Usually it would be on holidays or on our birthdays. We dined out on her birthday last year, but when it came to my birthday it was a different story. We scheduled a day to dine out for my birthday and she canceled it, she had to take one of her stinking guinea pigs to the vet and didn't have any money. So we rescheduled a different day, which turned out to be about a month later. No big deal, I thought.

Usually when we go out to eat all she wants talks about are those stupid guinea pigs. They all have names and different personalities, she says. She talks about what they eat and how they interact. She goes on and on about those stinking guinea pigs. she is basically obsessed with those rodents.

Anyways, I knew we were both gonna be off on Easter Sunday, so I rang her up on Saturday and asked her if she wanted to go get a bite to eat. She said okay and we agreed to meet at a particular restaurant and that we would meet by 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning I wake up, showered and got ready to go. I fore go-ed eating breakfast since we were going to be eating an early lunch. Before leaving I rang Ms. M up to confirm our time line and I just couldn't believe what she was telling me. She said that her "guinea pigs were running around her apartment and that she had to clean their cages" so she didn't have time to go eat out. Then she had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to go to lunch with her in Dresden on April 12th which is on a Saturday. I'm like thinking are you kidding me. (She is a big Longaberger fan.) Longaberger is located in Dresden.

Now mind you Dresden is a 2 hour drive from where we live. Not only do I have to work that day, but if I were to go, I would have to take a vacation day and I told her so. In my minds eye, I thought, well if you can't drive across town to go have Easter Dinner, I wasn't about to take a vacation day to go have lunch sixty something miles away. I'm saving my vacation to go visit my relatives.

From now on if she wants to dine out she is on her own. May be she could take her guinea pigs with her for conversation. And as far as those stinking guinea pigs are concerned, well they're only suitable for "ROAD KILL."
