I was an English Major

Amanda
I was an English Major in college. I was given a Bachelor's in Arts degree because my major was not really considered important enough to have its own degree. I have trouble finding a job because my degree does not show my skills. My major did not prepare me for a life of struggling to show my greatness. I graduated and ended up with a piece of paper on my wall and a job that does not show any of my skills. I work for minimum wage. I am at the same spot I was when I was sixteen years old. I feel like a failure.

I was an English Major. I have communication skills. I can critically and creatively think. I am a problem-solver with skills and abilities to research and analyze. I can be independence and initiative. I can synthesize information and summarizing ideas. I learned how to manage a project from conception to completion. I can find solutions to intricate problems. My many skills include strong understanding of grammar and mechanics. Editing for copy and content .Speaking and writing with clarity, precision, and flair for a wide variety of audiences Initiating, planning, and carrying out complex projects

The careers they told me I could choose from were endless; advertising and public relations, business, teaching, human resources, journalism, media writing, editing, and publishing. I thought I could be a Reporter or Freelance writer. I dreamed of being a literary critic or an author.

A year out of college and I still work for minimum wage. Maybe it is the dying economy holding me back from all my hopes and dreams. Maybe it is that I have to work harder then most to find the jobs I want and become what I dream to be. Maybe an English major's job is never done and I will have to continue to use my skills to get myself into a job field. Maybe my years of college are for not. I am starting to think being an English major was, simply put, a dumb move. Maybe I should of went for teaching, or nursing, or some other major. Am I the only major struggling to find a job? I hope and I pray that one day I will be proud to be an English major.

It is not you. The economy sucks right now. Millions of people are out of work regardless of major. Many companies went out of business or just downsized. Many of the corporate jobs got cut like advertising, writing, human resources, etc. But companies still need the work done so the work is done by freelances. Check out elance.com.
I graduated with an English major in 2009. I went into teaching, because I thought teaching was secure from any recession. But in June the school I was working for laid off 20 teachers so now I am looking for another teaching job. It is not just you. I can't wait till the economy recovers. But don't worry you are a great writer, so I am sure when you will have an amazing writing career.
