I Went to the Water's Edge

Lisa Stanley

I went to the waters edge

Falling in

While reaching for her hand

Struggling to free her

From her own demise.

She forgot she couldn't swim.

And I forgot how the water

Engulfs my skin

With bitter cold

Suffocation.

I forgot that I could not swim.

When my instinct kicked in

Reaching for a hand....

That I never found-

How can I die

And survive-

When I felt myself

Sinking to the bottom

Of the waters grip?

How can I lose

All the breath that

Has sustained me

From the moment of my birth-

And open my eyes

To the sunlight

Laying at the bottom

Of an empty rock filled river-

And survive?

Such an emotional piece of writing!

This reminds me of the time that I nearly drowned while in a fresh water pond with friends...of course, one can get that "sinking" feeling when weighed down by life's hardships...excellent work!
