I Would If I Could Write a Sonnet for You

Louisa Burgess
I've been trying to write a sonnet
it seemed to be a fitting form
I'll keep trying but the truth is simply
I don't think my feelings fit the norm

How many syllables does it take
ten or eleven or maybe less maybe more
then there is the matter of rhyming
compared to my feelings it's quite a bore

So I won't write a sonnet any day soon
Shakespeare and Petrarch I am not
the octave will come but the sestet won't follow
or vice versa and then I'm in a spot

One thing is true about the romantics
be they Italian or English or any of you
feeling is what they do best in a hurry
not thinking and so they may wind up blue

Love is the subject of sonnets in general
it's contrary to keep that feeling to a form
so diddle instead about the moon and your heart
feelings just don't always want to conform
