I Would Rather Vote for Mickey Mouse!

Emma
I confess that I did not register to vote until about two presidents ago. I also confess that I did not vote even though I was registered. Why? Because I was involved with personal issues, and trying to figure out the lesser of the two evils was the last thing on my mind.

That being said, when I learned that Hilary Clinton was running for the presidential nomination, I got very excited and made sure that I was registered for this election. Not because she was a woman, but because I felt she was the best person for the job. I did feel that being a woman would shake up the old boys' club. I also felt that she was made of sturdy stuff, and that she would be able to handle whatever this country and the world would throw at her. I also felt that because she was a woman, maybe the other leaders and political players of the world would think twice before assuming how she would handle things. We have seen her in action, both as the First Lady and a senator. In all honesty, she couldn't do much worse than the current leaders we have today.

I was greatly disappointed when she lost. Now I had to try to figure out which of the two would possibly be the best one to be our new leader. In all honesty, I don't like either candidate. I would prefer to write in Hilary Clinton. Even worse: not vote again!

When trying to learn about our choices, we rely heavily on the information provided to us by the media. Yet, how are we to figure out what is true, and what is a fairy tale? Even my son, while watching a "paid for" commercial, asks if what is being told to us is true. I have to admit that I don't know.

Is there a politician out there who does not stretch the truth for his or her own benefit? I doubt it very much. If there is, they are the ones who should be running! I am so confused about what is true and what is not, again I don't want to vote for either candidate.

I was impressed with the daring move of making Sarah Palin a running mate. Because of being a career woman and a mom, she would appeal to a lot of women and men alike.

Of course, now out comes all the dirty laundry. Possible scandal, both in Palin's family and government, makes us question her ability to be a vice president.

When people are living everyday lives, they make choices - good or bad - that they never even imagined would reappear years later for a public flogging. They weren't necessarily thinking of being a politician at that time when they are 21 years of age.

Yet, we Americans drool over the possibility of learning some juicy gossip that could ruin the opposing candidate's chances. What we really should be considering is the decisions that they have made that would reflect how they would run a city, state, or country.

So what if she wasn't the perfect soccer mom. Or maybe he did have an affair - a sad turn of events, but, in all honesty, has little to do with running our country. What the media and the public should be focusing on is what they have or have not done that has affected our country. The media should also be focusing on getting us the facts, so that we know what is real and what is paid for.

This election terrifies me. The country is falling apart. The CEO's of the financial world have helped bring this on, with their extreme salaries, three summer homes, and multiple vacations. Now, we find out that one of the rescued banks hid information from the auditors. The politicians made a decision to rescue these businesses, against the Americans' better judgment, and now they have egg on their face.

If these people, who represent our country, were fooled by this company, how will they not be fooled by dangerous world leaders? How are we supposed to not be fooled while trying to choose who should be our next president?

Time is running out. The media needs to help us cut through the garbage so that we can make the best choice possible. We need straight facts, not juicy gossip and half-truths. Our lives are going to be in the hands of this person.

It may be too late to correct any damage that may have been done by mis-representation of the facts.

If so, I may have to vote for Mickey Mouse.
