Iberostar Quetzal Review: Mayan Riviera

Iberostar All Inclusive Resorts Review: Quetzal & Tucan

This particular Iberostar resort is located by Playa Del Carmen in the Mexican Riviera, about 45 minutes south of Cancun. These two resorts are actually combined. Although they both have their own check in areas and buffet restaurants, they share specialty restaurants, entertainment and beach.

I am more familiar with the Quetzal side, which is very lush, jungle like, with flamingos, peacocks and monkeys roaming around freely. The Tucan side seemed more steeped in Mayan influence, with a more upscale feel, instead of rustic and homey. I would choose the Quetzal side again, as it was lovely.

Rooms are nicely appointed. There are refrigerators that are kept well stocked with water, beer and soda. Colors are rich, granite plentiful, and if you're lucky you might get a room close enough to the beach to leave your windows open and sleep to the sounds of surf.

This is an all-inclusive resort, which includes all non-motorized watercraft, all food and drinks. There is food available at all times somewhere on the property. You won't want to miss the ice cream bar on the beach.

The beach is large and beautiful, well kept, with plenty of helpful employees happy to bring you drinks. There are plenty of palm-shaded areas to sit under so you can bake or bask as you will. Be aware that this resort has quite a few European visitors; so don't be shocked to see a few women missing their tops. There are opportunities for activities for extra pay such as para sailing, scuba lessons, snorkeling trips etc. There are also craft areas, but we found those prices out of line with reality so passed.

The buffet areas are fine, but you are also allowed choices of signature restaurants depending on your length of stay. We stayed seven days and were able to go to three different signature restaurants. There is no extra charge for these restaurants. I can vouch that the Asian, Italian and Steak House restaurants were very good. By the way the water at the resort is filtered and is just fine. No worries in your room or anywhere onsite.

There is entertainment nightly and they work very hard to make it a fun time. Not all of the entertainment was up my alley, but what we viewed was enjoyable.

There are opportunities for additional excursions to ruins, water parks, wildlife sanctuary, etc., and these cost extra. This area is geared for tourists and you will not find bargains. If you go into town be prepared to be assaulted by shopkeepers trying to lure you into their shop. I would avoid Playa Del Carmen in the extreme.

I would heartily recommend Iberostar Quetzal to anyone looking for a nice all-inclusive vacation in the Mexican Riviera.
