IBM Will Launch Super- Fast Power 6 Chip in June

Chris M. Carmichael
According to the Associated press, the computer world took a large leap ahead today as IBM Corp announced today that a new, faster microprocessor, Power6, will be available for sale this June.

The power6 is the fastest microprocessor in the world.

The Power6 chip functions at 4.7 gigahertz--a significant increase over other processors.

Indeed, this microprocessor works more than twice as fast as other processors, including IBM's own Power5 processor which runs at a maximum clock frequency of 2.3GHz.

According to the article by Jordan Robertson of AP, IBM states that, along with the tremendous power of the chip, the Power6 contains significantly larger bandwidth of 300 gigabytes per second. The company says that this means the Power6 is able to process the entire library of itunes within 60 seconds.

In addition to the amazing speed and power of the new micro processing chip, the Power6 is able to run faster and more efficiently while consuming no more energy, and possibly less energy, than other, slower, processors.

Designed to be more energy efficient, the Power6 has a "nap" mode which idles at very low power. When parts of the memory are not being used, power to the areas are turned off and then turned back on as needed. The Power6 is also able to sense thermal conditions and change voltage according to zdnet.com.

The energy efficient design is a result of IBM's decision to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner and to help businesses leave less of a "carbon footprint" by cutting down on the processor's energy requirements.

IBM has stated that it was able to increase the processing chip's performance by manipulating silicon strands in new ways, "squeezing them," and by adding new insulation to reduce the heat that is created during faster processing.

To accompany the new Power6 chip, IBM has also launched a new incredibly powerful server which has been designed to optimize the special abilities of the Power6 chip. The new server is record-breaking, holding speed records for business and technical performance.

The launch of the new super-fast Power6 chip in the new IBM System p™ 570 server is especially good news for tax and financial businesses:

"Until now, calculations involving decimal numbers with floating decimal points were done using software. The built-in decimal floating point capability gives tremendous advantage to enterprises running complex tax, financial and ERP programs. "
