Ice Cream Soda Halloween Costume

An Easy and Inexpensive Children's Halloween Costume that You Can Make Yourself

Susan Sonnen
One Halloween many years ago, I made my daughter a children's ice cream soda Halloween costume. She loved it, her friends loved it and fellow trick-or-treaters loved it! It was extremely simple to make, needing very little time to assemble. Also, I was able to make it from items that I had around the house. I did not have to buy one thing for this costume! Now you may not have all of the items at home, as I did, but none of the required materials are costly.

Supplies Needed for Children's Ice Cream Soda Halloween Costume

-One long and sturdy white, plastic trash bag
-White pillow fluff
-Sequins
-Glitter
-Stickers
-Straws

How to Make Children's Ice Cream Soda Halloween Costume

The secret to successfully putting this children's ice cream soda Halloween costume together is to work gently with the plastic trash bag material. A small tear or tears will not cause a serious problem, but you don't want to shred it! This costume is best for preschool and early elementary aged children, as their bodies will allow extra space when the trash bag (with a hole cut along the center of the bottom seam) is pulled over them. Children should always have enough room to move their arms and legs freely in a Halloween costume.

First of all, cut along the center of the bottom seam of the trash bag, leaving room for your child's shoulders. Cut arm holes on the sides of the bag.

Secondly, you want to attach the pillow fluff to the areas around the hole in the bottom seam of the trash bag that you have cut for your child to be able to pull the costume over her head. You can attach the pillow fluff with a stapler and just spread the fluff over the staples so that they do not show. Perhaps there is a craft glue that will work with the pillow fluff and plastic trash bag, but stapling worked fine for my daughter's children's ice cream soda Halloween costume.

Now you can decorate the pillow fluff (which is the ice cream soda's frothiness and whipped cream, by the way) with sequins and glitter to add some sparkle to an otherwise all white children's Halloween costume.

Place stickers all over the body of the trash bag to make it look like a decorated styrofoam cup. On my daughter's children's ice cream soda Halloween costume, I used simple circle stickers of different colors.

Personalize your children's ice cream soda Halloween costume by allowing your child to make choices as to the colors of sequins, glitter and stickers that are used.

Wearing Children's Ice Cream Soda Halloween Costume

Prior to a Halloween party or trick-or-treating, gently pull the children's ice cream soda Halloween costume over your child's head, letting her put her arms through the arm holes before pulling the costume down. Be sure to tell her to close her eyes as you pull the costume over her head in order that no glitter or sequins will get into her eyes.

Now stick one or several bendy straws into the pillow fluff. For my daughter's children's ice cream soda Halloween costume, we used several straws. After all, it's an ice cream soda big enough for several people!

Your children's ice cream soda Halloween costume is finished. Have a fun and safe Halloween!

This is such a good idea. I am going to send this to my granddaughter for the little one. Thanks so much.
