Ice Cube: Raw Footage Early Album Review

Can Ice Cube Transform from Family Films Back to Gangsta Rap?

The Reviewer
Ice Cube is a legend in rap. Besides being a member of the legendary N.W.A., Ice Cube was also on the forefront of West Coast hip hop. Lately though, Ice Cube has been even more famous for his roles in films including Are We There Yet?, the Friday series and the soon to be released The Longshots. Now Ice Cube is re-entering the music game with his latest album Raw Footage. Can the legendary rapper make the transition back to music?

The first single off of Raw Footage is the Maestro produced Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It. The song sounds as if it was a leftover for the upcoming The Game album L.A.X. The song is definitely a street anthem.

The second single is Do Ya Thang. The track is a more modernized interpretation of West Coast gangsta rap. The song is catchy and interesting sonically.

On the DJ Toomp produced I Got My Locs On, Ice Cube is joined by Young Jeezy. The song has an epic appeal as most of DJ Toomp's songs do. The song is catchy and will do extremely well at radio especially on the West Coast.

Get Used To It teams Ice Cube with fellow West Coast stars The Game and W.C. The track is simplistic which gives the rappers time to show off their verses. The low point of the track is the repetitive chorus.

Why Me features R&B star Musiq Soulchild. The song features a strong beat and a definite West Coast appeal. Musiq Soulchild delivers a solid chorus and Ice Cube takes his flow back to the early 1990's.

The Maestro produced Get Money, Spend Money, No Money features an ominous piano driven beat. However, the beat outshines the lyrics.

It Takes A Nation is a traditional West Coast song. You can hear low riders riding down Crenshaw Boulevard bouncing to the track.

Take Me Away features Butch Cassidy. The track features song production and strong verses from Ice Cube.

Stand Tall just might be the best track on the album. The song has a 1970's feel to it and just works extremely well with Ice Cube's flow and delivery.

It could be a little confusing for a listener of this album. If you are not familiar to early Ice Cube material, than you might only know Ice Cube from his family comedies. This album is not like any of those movies. It could seem like a massive contradiction but in this state of hip hop you never know. Overall Raw Footage gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Ice Cube make sure you pick up Raw Footage when it is available in stores on August 19th.
