Alexander's Lake in the far northeast corner of Killingly is by far the deepest of these bodies of water. It is a hotspot for trout fishing under the ice in eastern Connecticut but the lake, which is 215 acres, is one of the last bodies of water in the area to have safe ice. This means that the window to fish Alexander's Lake is a small one, as the ice fishing season there ends on February 29th this year so that the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has the opportunity to stock trout. Alexander's Lake is the premier trout fishing lake in the region for ice fisherman, but there are largemouth and smallmouth bass in it as well. White and yellow perch also inhabit this Killingly lake, which can be accessed from Interstate 395 off Exit 94, heading west and following the road signs a short distance.
Killingly Pond is on the opposite side of the town, nestled on the Rhode Island border so close that it actually extends into the Ocean State. A Connecticut or Rhode Island fishing license is good on either side of Killingly Pond, which usually has safe ice before the other three ice fishing spots mentioned in this article. Killingly Pond is crystal clear in the summer, and the depth of this 122 acre lake ranges from 6 to 20 feet depending on where you are. This pond is a favorite of ice fishing enthusiasts who are after yellow perch, but there are bass of both varieties and chain pickerel also. Killingly Pond is found off of Exit 93 from 395, to the west on Pond Road off of Route 101, right before the Rhode Island line. Parking is perplexing, but suffice to say that everyone looking to ice fish parks right by the pond next to a high chain link fence that says "No Parking!" Killingly Pond does not shut down when February is torn off the calendar, one of two of these 4 fisheries that can be ice fished during March.
The state record pickerel came out of Quinebaug Pond at one time, which is also called Wauregan Reservoir. That standard fell in 2005, but there are still some monsters in this 88 acre lake which is designated a Bass Management Lake by the DEP. This means that there are specific creel and size slot limits on bass taken here. Quinebaug Pond is in southeast Killingly off of Route 12, with good road signs available to guide you in. There are trout in Quinebaug Pond, an oval shaped lake that is not overly deep which sees its ice fishing campaign end on the last day of February.
Ross Pond is the smallest of this quartet but it has by far the most striking scenic beauty, as it is at the base of a large stone cliff in the Old Furnace State Park off of Route Six in south Killingly. There is ample parking at Ross Pond, which is a 31 acres in area pond that contains largemouth bass that can give you plenty of action if they are in the mood. Ross Pond stays open after the end of the second month, giving Killingly ice fisherman one more option as spring approaches.
