Ice Hockey Rules: What is the Abuse of Officials Rule?

John Smith
In ice hockey, one of the most important rules that needs to be emphasized is the abuse of officials rule. This rule is very important for officials as it outlines proper respect and how players should treat referees. Captains and coaches are allowed to communicate with the referee in an appropriate, professional manner. They are allowed to ask for an explanation or interpretation of a rule, but under no circumstance are they allowed to challenge or dispute a call that the referee has made.

Under the abuse of officials rule, if a player or coach challenges or disputes a ruling that the referee has made, then he or she will first receive a two minute minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. If the player or coach continues the behavior, then he or she will receive an additional ten minute misconduct penalty. If the behavior continues to escalate, the player or coach will receive a game misconduct and will be forced to immediately leave the game and will also not be allowed to participate in the next game.

There are other abuse of officials rules in place that also help officials maintain control of the game. For example, if a player intentionally shoots the puck away from the referee while he or she is attempting to retrieve it, the offending player will receive a ten minute minor penalty. Another example is if a player is assessed a penalty and he or she does not go directly to the penalty box as directed by the referee. In this case, the player will also receive a ten minute misconduct penalty.

For more severe infractions of the abuse of officials rules, players and coaches can receive harsher punishments. For example, if a player or coach uses and kind of obscene gesture or racial/ethnic slur then he or she will be given a game misconduct penalty. Even more severely, if a player or coach attempts to harm an official, then he or she will be given a match penalty, resulting in a suspension and hearing from the proper authorities. Mutual respect is a very important part of ice hockey, so the abuse of officials rules are very important.
