Ice Road Truckers - Season 1

A Truckers Prospective

Dean Cody
Ice Road Truckers is a TV show that airs on History Channel on Sundays 9/8 PM. It features 6 extreme truck drivers and trucks that deliver supplies and materials from Yellowknife, in Canada's Northwest Territories, to oil and gas rigs. These drivers are hauling up to 60 tons across frozen lakes and highways of ice in temperatures down to -40.

Hugh is the boss of the drivers. He's a smart and capable driver, who is abrasive, likes to cuss and brag. Rick is Hugh's biggest competition on the ice, and best friend off the ice.He is a rookie on the ice and a loudmouth. He quits after having a major argument with Hugh. Alex is a character to say the least. Very intelligent and experienced on the ice, he is a prison minister off the ice. J is a big headed rookie who comes from a family of truckers. He has an attitude, and is not willing to pus it when the weather is bad. Drew is an experienced driver who is new to the ice. He is saddled all season with truck problems including having a transmission go out. He finally quits after having his truck freeze up out on the ice. Jay is the youngest driver, who has been driving since he was 16. He is an experienced and capable driver who bought his first truck at 16.

The show is pretty much based around the competition of the drivers. They compete to see who can get the most loads finished, who is the better driver, and anything else they can figure out. There is a lot of conflict between the drivers at time, being with their personalities, they are not afraid to argue. During the season, Hugh, hauled 37 loads to win bragging rights for the seasons most loads. Alex is right behind him with 36. Alex also hauled the heaviest load ever to be hauled across the ice road.

Its a great show, that allows you to see the beauty of the Canadian wilderness. You never know when you will see a boat stuck in the ice, or a truck that has fallen through. I know from this former truck driver's standpoint, it looks like fun, but I'll stay on the asphalt.
