Ice Skating on the Pond

Elena dal Friuli
I was ten when we first met
The ice on the lake was all set
We went skating with friends all around
I lost my balance and fell to the ground.

You came towards me and offered a hand
I never forgot how you helped me stand.

Our separate ways we went as we grew
But you stayed in my heart, this I knew.
I was eighteen when our paths crossed again
By plane you came from far away Maine.

The lake once again was frozen enough
Although our skating was sort of rough.

You told me your studies were going well
You said in life you wanted to excel.
Then gently your hand you offered once more
And this time my heart began to soar.

You pulled me close and softly said
You wanted to think of times ahead.

You had to return to your home real soon
But we were to meet next day at noon.
We skated once more on the frozen pond
Our hands interlocked in a special bond.

As you held my hand you spoke of times past
Of the time long ago when you saw me last.

You laughed as you remembered my fall to the ground
Then quietly stopped and turned me around.
Gently you leaned and tenderly kissed me
My heart then stopped as you fell on one knee.

Marry me, I heard you say
And a ring you presented on that wonderful day.

My knees felt weak and I almost fell
But you held me tight and under your spell.
Of course I said yes, I could not deny
My love for you was higher than the sky.

Many years have gone by, our children now grown
But we still go ice skating on a pond of our own.
