Iced In

Hatchet thuds
to crack the top,
chipping deeper
every swing.
.
And then,
the miracle occurs . . .
water flowing to the top.
A pool revealed,
to drink.
.
For a moment then
are she and I sustained
before the crawl of cold
creeps forth to cover all--
.
the horse
the water,
and my mind--
in frost that feels
like no-end-coming.
