Iceland Volcano - Hundreds Evacuated - Thousands Stranded as Flights Are Halted

Iceland Volcano - Can Cause Havoc for Months After Eruption

Roz Zurko
In Iceland, more than 500 people have been safely evacuated near the eruption of the Eyjafallajoekull glacier volcano. The glacier is in southern Iceland and the eruption so far has not caused any causalities.

The eruption of this volcano has caused air traffic to be re-routed around the area. All flights within a 120 mile radius of the volcanic eruption has been stopped.

All flight traffic has been stopped in and out of Iceland due to this eruption. Close to one thousand air travelers are stranded in Iceland at this time due to the halt on flights in and out of the country. The travelers were going to Europe, the flights were headed for Stockhol, London, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Oslo.

Three planes that were headed to Iceland from the US are still in the US with about 500 passengers waiting to depart to Iceland. These flights are in Orlando, Boston, and Seattle.

The airline sent messages to all the hotels in the area asking that the passengers stay in their hotels until the stop-flight has been lifted.

Iceland is a country of volcanoes and one of the greatest eruptions occurred in the Laki Volcano back in 1783. This volcano caused one of the biggest disasters in living history. This eruption killed many thousands and spread a massive cloud of ash that covered most of Europe and parts of North America.
The cloud affected crops causing widespread famine across Europe. It changed the weather pattern, bringing violent thunderstorms to Europe killing livestock in the fields.

Iceland has volcanoes extending both above ground and under the ocean. A volcano last erupted in 1821 and 1823 in the area of the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier.

The 1783 Laki volcano eruption in Iceland left that year without a summer. The sun was covered by the vast cloud caused by the Laki eruption it turned the summer into winter, not just in Iceland, but all over Europe. "It was reported that the sun either remained as a pale ghost or took on a strange, blood red color in the volcanic haze".

There is no word yet on what the re-percussions of this volcanic eruption will bring.
