Idealism Vs. Reality

The Death of One Woman's Idealism

Faith Bowie
I'm a silly child, I know this. I love Journey and Jem, Bento and Loose Socks (however out of style they may be), and however cynical I may have become over the years I know nothing would make me happier than to be idealistic again.

I know now that people will never be equal no matter what's preached to us from the government pulpit. I know that my religion and hundreds of others are considered dangerous and are under constant attack from the world's religious majority, and that won't change in my lifetime. I know that the color of your skin still means as much to people now as it ever did and that racial hate will outlive me. I know that there's no such thing as real freedom unless you're the one with the money and power. I know that your sexual orientation can get you killed very easily in a country that claims to be free. I know that people are so scared of losing their hold on the country (or countries) that if they have to drag Jesus name into politics to win, they'll do it, regardless of what Jesus may think about that. I'll never change the world, but what nags my soul a bit is that I can't even make it better.

It's not easy being very liberal in a very conservative part of the country. It's hard to hear your friends talk about how afraid they are that their family may find out their gay or they've chosen beliefs other than Protestant. It's hard to have to put on a fake cheery disposition and use my 'White Voice' when speaking to others because the way I really am isn't just inappropriate, it's downright offensive to be ethnic and liberal.

It's offensive to have gay friends and support gay rights. It annoys people that I don't always agree with them, or that I'd love to have religion (any religion) play a small part if any in the government. People don't like that I speak my mind, that I have an odd sense of humor or that I dare to speak to or associate with the horrible 'brown skinned' people that are so rare here. And people are downright hostile that I don't go to the same church and break the same commandments as they do, and they've let me know that it's not acceptable - I've got a few scars to attest to that. Being different isn't easy, it's dangerous.

I'd love to pretend this is an isolated situation in an isolated place, because this place ( the land that time forgot ) is back-asswards. But, in reality, this is how it is all over the world. It doesn't matter what the majority believes, if you don't agree then you'd better start running. With all of the leaps and bounds made in science, government, social issues, etc., we can't get past the fact that if you're different you have no place in society. There's no such thing as 'different strokes for different folks', and that sickens me.

As I believe is obvious I have no love of Christianity. I don't like Islam, I have a love-hate relationship with Judaism and if I could kill George W. Bush with my bare hands and not get sent to the chair for it, I'd do it (I feel like the only thing stopping me is fear for my own life, lol), but when it comes right down to it the only real problems I have with these religions, or with extreme Righties in the government, are the ones that deal with might equaling right. I wouldn't have such a bone to pick if everything other thing they believe in didn't end with, "And whoever disagrees is wrong and automatically goes to hell, so if they're going to hell anyway, why don't we save them time and just dispatch with them now?" - basically, if they didn't promote tolerance towards themselves while practicing extreme intolerance towards everyone else because everyone else is 'evil'.

I don't know about you, but all I want is the freedom to live in a truly free world. Unfortunately it's not going to happen, not while people are involved. So parents? Force those kids to go to Church! Punish them from deviating from your opinion! Punish more if they wear dark clothes, and be even harder on them if they have ideals! And Husbands, does your wife want a job? Thank the ONE TRUE GOD that looks over our great, powerful country of everyone who's right, that Man is better than Woman and can tell her to stay at home. After all, what will the neighbors think? A woman being equal is almost as bad as a woman waiting until she's 24 to get married! Almost.

Something like 83% of citizens in the USA identify themselves as Christian. That's 80%+ of grown people who think the world is less than 10,000 years old. Yep, that's a fragile minority for you.

I agree with you about Zealots, 100% - it's too bad more people can't find some grey area, or middle ground. Yeah the internet's uncensored - for now. In the U.S. there are laws being pushed right now that would censor the internet and your access to it, scary!

Often converts are zealots to the point of oppression. I've found that with religious zealots and ideological zealots, especially. Oh, and former smokers fall into this category sometimes. Darn right to be frightened about AC. Thank Odin for the internet and that most if it remains uncensored. Anybody here in the US can still have their own page.

Well my parents were both Christian -both converts- and they forced us to go to their church and then, after they were 'born again' we had to go through that ordeal, too so I have more than a basic understanding of Christianity. On top of that I'm life-long study of religious history, and while I don't claim to know anything about what an individual feels or thinks it's certain from the way my sects are treated that we're not deemed fit, after that kind of treatment I have a right to express my opinions based on my experiences which is all I'm doing. I don't much care if anyone else agrees with me, lol. I hope you find a better place to voice your opinions, if you do please drop me a line, AC is starting to frighten me lol.

Well, at least we agree on free speech. As for Constantine, he claimed to see a vision of the cross in the sky, and then had a dream where he was told he would conquer under that symbol. I don't think any of us are in a position to question the validity of any person's faith. And he is a little moldy for questioning. Please don't think I have anything against pagans. Or heathens for that matter. As i said, true pagans have noble beliefs. I find it tiring, though, that those who claim tolerance and compassion and understanding (even if you don't) will never look further into what they are disparaging. Many who criticize have a grade school understanding of Christianity, and forget that individuals make up the church and faith. I'm done with AC, though. It's too big a distraction, and I work for myself, so this really is a time and money waster. I have enjoyed my talks with you, and I wish you Peace. I hope you find it.

"I never said pagans were living safely all over the world, and you brought up what was said in the media, and i narrowed to a locale." Actually, you did say that - "Anyway, the last time pagans had to really fear for their lives in great numbers was right after Constantine." - as far as what the media said, either I said it wrong or you took it wrong, either way what I meant was if you go by our numbers in the media then yes, I can see how you'd say Conservatives are in the minority. I don't think Constantine did believe he saw a vision, but I can't say since I didn't know the man. "So if you are comfortable making sweeping generalizations regarding all Christians, then you will not be bothered by those who do the same with pagans? And how, then, can you fault them for the same thing you are guilty of?" I didn't fault anyone for lumping me in with other pagans, I don't remember doing that. I have fond relations with other pagans and heathans, actually.

Look, Faith, I am the victim of threats, physically and verbally, for my beliefs. I never said pagans were living safely all over the world, and you brought up what was said in the media, and i narrowed to a locale. You are right about Constantine, but he did think he saw a vision, so we will let him think what he wants and act on it. I am right about the lions.... they did have to eat. So if you are comfortable making sweeping generalizations regarding all Christians, then you will not be bothered by those who do the same with pagans? And how, then, can you fault them for the same thing you are guilty of? Enlighten this "Whore of Babylon" hell bound boy up here.

"What's interesting is what's not seen in the media, and that is the great killing of Christians and other faiths, including good pagans, by governments such as China." What's China got to do with what I said? I believe I said this is happening everywhere regardless of faith.

  • Faith Bowie4/11/2008

*No, actually I'm saying that MOST believe I'll go to their version of hell, but I'm not that concerned about that. I'm concerned that they'll send me their themselves. And yes, it is a sweeping generalization, I believe I stated that in the article, lol.

  • Faith Bowie4/11/2008

I agree about BO, I think we have common ground after all, lol. Actually there's no hard evidence that Christians were ever actually fed to lions, all of Rome's enemies were made an example of though, I'll give you that, no matter what their faith. Constantine didn't actually believe in Christianity, or that's what it looked like at least. He wanted a way to unite Rome, and he did it.. Also, I should point out that the concept that pagans have been safe for 1500 years is so very misinformed, I don't know where you're getting that, it really does beg of more research on your part or whoever told you that. I can back up my claims, if you want, but I'd have to do some searching. "Are you, personally, under great personal threat from anybody?" Yes, several people. "Are you trying to say that all Christians believe that you will go to their version of hell? That's a fairly sweeping generalization." Yes I am saying that. No, actually I'm saying that MOST believe I'll go to their version of h
