So You Want To Be An Inventor: Get Some Attention
I have been writing for that vast untapped Internet audience: Stay-At-Home-Moms. They need to be romanced, too. Many of them are college graduates and use the internet for more than shopping and reading articles like "Summation For the Defense of Paris Hilton". To my mind, being a Stay-At-Home-Mom is just as valid as, say, running an American Automobile Company.
In the States of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan (home to what was once called The Motor City) automoble plants and parts-distribution centers are being closed as the industry dissolves. If you add-in the Auto Industry suppliers that are closing plants and firing workers also, 200,000 American jobs with health insurance are going to be lost forever. A lot of former auto industry workers are going to become Stay-At-Home-Moms, for awhile anyway.
Some of them will be looking for businesses to invest-in with the buy-out money (severance pay) they receive for the past years spent working for the auto industry. Many of them have been working for the engineering departments and know their way around a computer-aided-design program. But, ideas to be developed don't have to be high-tech and complicated to be produced and sold as I discovered doing my research.
Professional product development departments of major consumer products companies acheive success (being defined as having a product accepted for sale by major retailers nationally) with one to three percent of the ideas they start working on. I am stating this at the beginning of this article because some good ideas are just not marketable. Before you start investing money in prototype production models of that revolutionary new bikini we will assume that your concept is unique, that no one has ever produced and attempted to sell it before.
You can do an online search for stringless bikinis and turn-up zero results, but it could be modeled in a fashion magazine or a trade publication like Woman's Wear Daily, so try and determine if it is has been produced and sold before; if so, perhaps it was uncomfortable to wear so after the first few were sold word-of-mouth discouraged further sales, and you can move-on to one of your other ideas.
If you decide that your idea's orginality would be welcomed in the marketplace you have to determine what products it would be competing with for that will determine it's sales price.
Making a preliminary prototype (model) will give you an idea of what will be involved in producing it. There is a television series American Inventor produced by Simon Fuller of American Idol. Watching this television reality show's participants as they develop their Good Ideas (with the help of professionals) will give you an idea of how six different products are developed.
A marketable idea doesn't have to made of plastic or steel, it can be made of eggs and wheat flour. That old family recipe can turned into the next fast-food-favorite. The Recipe Writer's Handbook by Barbara Ostmann www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0471405450/ref=nosim/your_httpgetoveblo-20_id will alieviate your culinary cluelessness and organize your thinking as to what input the food industry requires for production of packaged food items.
