String Strings
One of the cheapest Christmas yard decorations is to use strings of lights. Here is a unique approach to them. Go to your local hardware store and buy some wood. Any length would be sufficient, because you are going to cut it anyway. However, it would be best for a thickness of at least 1 ½ inches. This wood would then be but into poles that are about 2 inches wide and any height from 2 feet to 3 1/2 feet. Once you have enough poles to encircle the entire yard, drill a small hole into the tips of each. Obtain some small hooks with small opening (hooks used from old-fashioned screen doors will do fine). Insert one hook into each drilled hole and screw it in to secure it. Place each one of these stakes into the ground at equal distances apart. The final step is to take strands of lights, string them between the stakes, and continue until the entire yard is enclosed. Plug them up and you are done.
Line Your Yard
Another easy and cheap way to line your yard is to purchase enough packs of rope lighting (usually under $8 for about 18 feet) to encircle then entire yard. You will then need to purchase some yard stakes. Most retailers that sell Christmas decorations will have them available for about $3 or $4 for a pack of about 25. You will need enough to hold the rope down without it coiling up in the yard. Placement does not have to be at a set distance. It just needs to hold the rope lighting down securely. That's it!
Homemade Miniature Christmas Trees
Obtain some tomato vine grates (coned shaped, wire trellises) that are normally used with the small end down. Take these grates and cover them with at least two strands of lights in your color preference. Secure the end of the light strand with a cable tie. You now have miniature Christmas trees to decorate your yard cheaply and that can be stored and used again for many years to come.
Garland is Not Just a Place
One of the simplest yet decorative ideas for your yard is to use garland to decorate your yard. Add a few pre-made, colored, velvet bows to it and you have a nicely decorated yard. For a little more color, use some picks purchased from your local hobby store's floral department. Use the same poles used to line the yard and instead of lights, use garland. Do it in the same manner, just by hanging it between the poles.
