Creating a storybook pumpkin for your home or your child's school is a lot of fun. Choosing a children's storybook to base your pumpkin on is both challenging and exciting. For decorating ideas try to think outside of the box. Perhaps you can add a gourd for a nose or hat.

Here are some great ideas for creating a pumpkin based on a children's book for Halloween:

  • Rainbow Fish pumpkin
  • Little Miss Spider pumpkin
  • Cat in the Hat pumpkin
  • Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland
  • Clifford pumpkin
  • James and the Giant Peach caterpillar pumpkin
  • Carol from Where the Wild Things Are
  • Cow from Click Clack Moo
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Wilbur from Charlotte's Web
  • Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz
  • Owl pumpkin inspired by Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
  • Horton pumpkin inspired by Horton Hears a Who

When creating a pumpkin based on a book, it is better to paint a pumpkin than to try to carve it. With craft supplies you can achieve much greater detail. A painted pumpkin can last weeks instead of days. The only downside is the pumpkin will not be illuminated at night time.

Materials that may be useful for creating a pumpkin based on a children's book:
- paint (acrylic paint works well for painting a pumpkin)
- tissue paper
- construction paper
- craft glue (Aleene's Tacky Glue works very well)
- glue gun
- googley eyes
- Golf balls can be used for eyes
- feathers
- smaller pumpkins for additional body parts
- glitter
- alcohol to clean pumpkin before painting

Creating a special storybook pumpkin with your children will surely create memories that will last a lifetime.
