Ideas for Creative Decorating with Wallpaper

A. Hermitt
Wallpaper is a wonderful decorating tool, just as long as you aren't planning on covering every inch of your kitchen walls with a floral pattern. Still, used in moderation, you can make a large impact with wallpaper decorating. Here are some fun ideas you can use:

Create a mosaic by cutting your wallpaper into tiles. Purchase several different rolls of wallpaper, they should coordinate with or match each other, but not be the same. Make sure they are the pre-pasted kind that are easy to install and remove. Cut them into squares to simulate tiles. To create a mosaic on the wall, you may want to use 6 inch or larger squares. For a wall mosaic, arrange your "tiles" in a pleasing pattern over an entire wall, or on the wall behind the head of your bed. Once you decide on your pattern, you can wet the back and stick them in place, making sure they are smooth and the edges are stuck on well. Likewise, you can create a faux mosaic table top by making smaller wallpaper tiles and applying them to an old table, making it brand new. Top it with glass or decoupage it to make the design more permanent.

Create a one of a kind mural or design for your child's room with wallpaper. Purchase several brightly colored rolls of wallpaper, and decide on a theme for the room. If your theme is Alphabet, then simply cut out alphabet shapes from your wallpaper and arrange them on the walls of the child's room. If your theme is animals, then cut out animal shapes and apply them to the walls. You can also cut out a tree from a brown and beige pattern wallpaper, and leaves from a green patterned wallpaper for a very unique tree.

Create inexpensive framed artwork using wallpaper. Pick up a couple of wallpaper rolls that you like and then go frame hunting. Hobby stores often sell empty frames and if you time it right, you can get a great discount. Make sure that you choose a frame that is the right width for your wallpaper, your length sizes will depend on your whim, or how much wallpaper you have. You can carefully staple or wallpaper into the board for a quick and easy project. It is advisable that you paste your wallpaper piece onto a canvas or canvas board or other board (the size of your frame) and then insert it into your frame,

Create a magnificent headboard using wallpaper. Purchase a large piece of plywood, the length of your bed. Luan plywood is preferable as it is smooth and will take the wallpaper easily. Choose an extravagantly textured wallpaper such as something flocked in velvet, or heavily textured. This will be preferable to print, as you will not grow tired of the pattern as quickly. Apply the wallpaper to the plywood and install it on the wall with a cleat. Use an upholstery trim and nail heads or hot glue to finish the headboard sides which will be a lot easier than trying the wrap wallpaper around the edges of the plywood.
