Ideas for Decorating a Bedroom with a Beach Theme

Beth N.
When you think of the beach chances are you think of the soothing sounds of waves, warm sunshine and a calm, relaxing atmosphere. It is no wonder then that so many people choose a beach theme when they decorate their bedroom. Who wouldn't want to feel calm and relaxed in the room that they sleep in?

If you want to create your own peaceful beach themed getaway in your bedroom, here are some easy, inexpensive decorating ideas to get you started.

- Decide how you want the room to feel. Take a minute or two to sit down and brainstorm how the beach makes you feel. Close your eyes and picture yourself and the beach to see what comes to mind. Take out a piece of paper and jot down some of the things you think of first - sunshine, seashells, waves, cool breezes, etc. Then, try to think of some ways you can bring those things into your room either literally or figuratively.

- Choose the right colors. Typically when people are decorating with the beach in mind they choose one of two colors for the walls - either a soft, pale blue or a subtle sand shade. Since in this case you are decorating a bedroom you may want to consider going with blue. It is one of the most soothing and peaceful colors and can help you get a good night's sleep. If you do choose blue opt for a shade that is soft and calming - not bright and saturated. Think more along the lines of blue-gray instead of bright blue.

- Accent with white furniture. Most beach inspired rooms make use of white furniture to keep the setting light and airy. If you only have dark furniture on hand consider painting it white or covering it with white fabric. Think about accenting with natural wicker pieces as well if you want to bring a sense of nature indoors.

- Accessorize with beach-themed items. Shells and beach glass can make lovely accents when laid out in pretty dishes on a night stand. Try laying a piece of dry driftwood out on a table as a piece of art. Hang straw beach hats from simple hooks on the wall. Look for artwork that features nautical scenes or views of the ocean. Whatever accent pieces you choose you may want to avoid going for over-the-top cliché items. Instead, opt for pieces that subtly suggest the sand and surf.

- Avoid using too much dark fabric, furniture or paint. Try to keep a sense of lightness in the room so it doesn't get weighed down with heavy, dark colors.

These simple decorating tips should have you well on your way to your own beach-themed bedroom in no time.
