Ideas for Decorating a Dorm Room

Moving into a dorm can be an exciting new experience for any individual. However, there is a lot that goes into making a dorm feel like home during the school year. Personal touches, technology, and more all play a part in turning a dorm into more than just a place to sleep at night. Here are some ideas for making a dorm room livable and lovable.

1. If you have a favorite movie or artist, prepare to go scouting at retail stores for posters. Most stores simply throw out promotional posters once the promotion is finished. Ask the manager if you can have the poster. Even better, if you know someone that works at the store, ask them to hold onto the poster for you. These large posters take up a lot of wall space, offering a break from the common white or off-white color schemes of many universities.

2. Consider purchasing an aquarium. Fish are frequently the only pets allowed in university dorms, so an aquarium provides a bright and colorful view, as well as background noise, that will not get you into trouble. Just bear in mind that aquariums are fun to keep but require cleaning every four weeks or so.

3. Plants are another way to make sure the dorm is full of life. The wide variety available ensures that there is a plant to fit every personality- from prickly cacti to bushy money trees. If the aquarium idea above appealed to you, consider live plants as part of the aquarium decorations.

4. The bed is a huge part of any dorm room, and many college students spend more than enough time cuddled up in bed. Therefore, take the bed into account when decorating the dorm. Consider getting a bed set in either your favorite colors or the school colors

5. Clean surfaces are not often available in dorm rooms, but if you have them, consider covering those empty spaces with picture frames. Everyone needs a reminder of home and of times past, and decorative picture frames provide just that. If you feel creative, buy blank picture frames that can be decorated scrapbook-style.

Decorating such a small space is not always easy, but it is possible to have an equally stylish and comforting dorm room. Of course, if you share a room, it is important to consult your roommate before making an drastic changes. Aside from that, decorate and enjoy your time in college.
