Ideas for Decorating an Oversized Master Bedroom

A. Hermitt
I have one of those master bedrooms that make people say "What do you do such a big bedroom?" It's that big. My master bath, closet, and bedroom are on top of my generously sized kitchen and two car garage. You could fit an apartment into my bedroom. You would think that decorating such a big bedroom would be easy. However, it is harder than decorating a small bedroom. Over-sized bedrooms usually end up looking cluttered because you keep bringing in furniture until it is full, or it looks cold and stark because it is empty. These ideas for decorating an over-sized master bedroom will help you with such a dilemma.

Use large furniture items. A big room needs big furniture. If you put small furniture items in a large bedroom, they will look like doll house items in such a large scale. Sure, you can add side tables for the bed and the occasional favorite item, but for the most part, a large room needs big pieces.

Place your largest piece of furniture, typically the bed, in a place that balances the room. Put it on the longest wall in the room, preferably between two windows. When windows flank the bed, it visually increases the size of the bed and side table grouping which will make the bedroom appear less sparse.

Place a large armoire or television cabinet on the wall opposite the bed. Chairs or a chaise lounge at the foot of the bed will make television viewing more comfortable.

Pull items away from the wall. When you have an over-sized room, you have the freedom to pull items away from the wall. Make a furniture grouping of comfortable reading chairs and a table near a window. Consider buying a bed with a dresser built into the back of the headboard so can float it in the middle of the room.

Take advantage of the extra space and create a space for another function in your over-sized bedroom. For example, you may want to carve out a space for a dedicated dressing area. This may be a good place for exercise equipment. Another option is add a home office to your bedroom. This was ultimately my solution to dealing with my over-sized bedroom.

I have one of those extra large bedrooms also. Mine is considered a suite. It has the bedroom, a sitting area, two large walkin closets, a large bathroom with gorgeous features. It's my dream home. But you are so correct. I have a king sized bed in the room that sits between the two floor length windows. Great info! thanks
