Ideas for a Heathers Theme Party

J. Darling
In 1988, one of the most clever teenage dark comedies ever filmed was released: Heathers. The film, which has risen to cult status, is the story of teenage angst and social cliques with a violent twist. Veronica, played by Winona Ryder, is part of the most powerful clique at Westerberg High School along with three other girls who share the first name Heather. After Veronica starts dating Christian Slater's character (J.D.), their combined hatred for the shallow personalities of the Heathers results in deaths that are disguised as suicides. Veronica isn't exactly a willing participant in the deaths of her friends and other class mates, and danger starts to mount as she tries to sever ties with her psychopathic boyfriend. Heathers is filled with clever, witty dialog, teenage angst, and a unique style.

Theme parties are very popular, and here are some ideas for fans of Heathers wanting to throw a Heathers theme party. Most people who attend theme parties dress as a character from the movie, and for the Heathers theme party you'll want to look for clothes from the 80s: think big shoulder pads, blazers, pleated skirts, and flats (for females). Search your local vintage or thrift stores, or Ebay for clothing from the 80s. Each of the Heathers and Veronica wore a particular color throughout the movie. Veronica's color was blue, Heather Chandler wore red, Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) wore green, and Heather McNamara wore yellow. Make sure to wear tights and a hair scrunchie or ribbon in your teased hair. If you can find a Swatch watch, there's a Swatch reference in the movie ("...Swatch dogs and Diet Coke heads...). One of the most stylish costumes in the film is the one Heather Chandler wears when she posthumously appears at another funeral in a dream sequence, and would probably require some do-it-yourself stitching. J.D. wears dark colors, mainly most of his outfits are concealed under a long trench coat. Other characters wear lettermen jackets, and Martha Dumptruck wears a white t-shirt featuring the name of the bad "Big Fun" who sings the song, "Teenage Suicide: Don't Do It."

There are a few references in Heathers, the most prevalent being pate. If you don't think guests will eat liver, there are other pate recipes that don't use liver, such as this mushroom bacon pate from Yum Recipes. Serve tater tots, spaghetti with extra oregano, Corn Nuts, and other finger foods. Diet Coke could be used as a mixer with rum. If you can get your hands on a copy of the Heathers soundtrack, which features a score by composer David Newman, play that in the background when you and your guests play a game of croquet.
