The first thing you should always do is to make sure you are familiar with your product or service. You should always have the answers for your clients, however when the situation arises that you do not have the answer make sure you let them know that you will get that information for them. Do not make them feel inferior in any way, they need to know you are serious about your product or service and how important they are to you. Find out the answer to their question and get back in touch with them promptly. This only helps to build your repertoire with them.
When you have familiarized yourself with the product or service, there are many things you can do to prospect. Personally, I talk to everyone I know first. Some people do not like doing this, however I find their feedback really useful. You should make sure you have business cards and other reading materials for your potential clients. This is absolutely crucial for your success. No matter where you are, you should leave your business card behind. You never know when someone will want to contact you, besides if you leave a business card in the right area you could end up finding a lot of contacts. Even if you do not have business cards, you should always mention your product or service to everyone you meet. Always ask them for your business and references, before you leave. You never want to come across as desperate or pushy, customers tend to shy away from people like this. You want to be enthusiastic and confident, customers do enjoy their conversations much more.
Cold calling is another art form of its own. However, the DNC list makes this part of the job a little more strenuous. Calling a person on the DNC list, could prove to be an expensive mistake. There are many companies that provide lead lists to businesses, so you can look into contacting one of these companies. I, personally, do not recommend them for new business owners. These leads are quite expensive. Then again, it may be in your best interests to purchase the leads, rather than paying the fine involved in violating the DNC list.
Business to business calls are a lot easier to handle than calling individual clients. Most business owners are more than happy talking with someone about a product or service that would be beneficial to their company. The only problem you could end up facing is dealing with the gatekeepers. These are usually the secretaries in the main lobby, who are instructed to filter out the sales calls. The best approach to take with a gatekeeper is to find out who you would need to talk to. Most of the time they will tell you, then you can ask them if there is any way you can schedule an appointment with the person you need to talk to. Another approach you can take is to ask if you could leave a voicemail with the person you need to speak with. A lot of people do not like doing this, but the way I look at it is this, if they are not interested it will not matter. What is the worst that can happen? Simple, they do not return your phone call.
Another necessity for phone work is a tablet or index cards. You should make sure you write down everyone you have spoken with and details of the call. I actually have my index cards separated by the months of the year. After I have made the call, it is imperative to place that index card within the month they want a return call. I pull out the index cards before I make any other calls.
Finally, you can place advertisements and fliers places with high visibility. The more people who see your product or service, the better. Everyone has heard the saying, "it takes money to make money." This is especially true with advertising, however you can work within your budget until you can afford better promotion. It is really up to you how you want to approach your promotions. There are numerous places to advertise, your best bet is to research what advertising campaigns will work best for you.
