Ideas for Homemade Valentine's Day Decorations

Whether you're having a Valentine's Day party, a date night or just having friends over, you'll need some decorations to spruce up your home. All you need are some ideas for cheap and easy Valentine's Day decorations you can make yourself.

Heart Garland

Cut some 10 inch tall hearts out of cardboard. Cut some red, pink and white fabric to the same size and shape as the cardboard hearts, then attach it with fabric adhesive. Use a hole punch to make a hole in the outer top of each Valentine's Day heart decoration. Then attach the hearts together with red ribbon. On Valentine's Day, string the heart garland up along a wall, the ceiling or on a piece of furniture.

Heart Candles

Cut out some small heart decorations from construction paper. If you prefer, you can also use heart-shaped sequins. Attach them to the sides of several clear glass votive holders with glue. Place a red, white or pink scented votive candle inside the holders. Place them around your home and light them on Valentine's Day.

Paper Rose Centerpiece

Get some red, pink and white 5 inch square pieces of tissue paper and some green chenille stems. Layer together 4 pieces of tissue paper, either of the same or different colors. Fold the tissue paper into an accordion fold. Cut the corners of the folded pieces of tissue paper to round them off. Wrap a chenille stem around the tissue paper and twist it closed. Open up the folds on both sides of the tissue paper rose. Cut out a heart-shaped piece of Styrofoam, cover the bottom with green felt and surround the edges with paper or silk rose leaves. Poke holes in the Styrofoam heart with a screwdriver or pair of scissors. Trim the chenille stems if necessary, then insert them in the foam centerpiece. Set the paper rose centerpiece on your table on Valentine's Day.

Balloon Bouquet

Find between 9 and 13 balloons and some ribbons in Valentine's Day colors. Also find a Mylar balloon with a Valentine's Day themed design such as roses, cupids or hearts. On Valentine's morning, have all the balloons filled with helium. Tie them off and attach them to the ribbons. Stagger the balloons so that they're on different levels and place the Mylar balloon at the center of the bouquet. Tie the ribbons together at the bottom and attach a decorative weight to hold them down.
