When a person celebrates his 40th birthday, many people consider that over the hill. Over the hill birthday cakes don't just have to be for 40th birthdays, but can be for birthdays that are also over 40. Some people may not consider 40 over the hill, but might think 50 is. When planning an over the hill birthday party, you need to consider options for different over the hill birthday cakes. If you plan on making your own over the hill birthday cake here are some ideas to help you get started making your own personalized over the hill birthday cake.

There are plenty of over the hill birthday cakes that can be made out of a regular sheet cake. One over the hill birthday cake that you can do is to make a sheet cake and then put an actual "hill" on the cake. This can be done by baking a normal flat layer cake and then baking another cake in a casserole bowl or any other bowl that can be put into the oven. Shape the bowl cake to resemble a hill and place it in the middle of the flat cake. Frost the cake to appear as a hill or mountain. Some added features for this over the hill birthday cake is to add a road made of frosting going over the hill. Place a toy car on the other side of the hill. Another idea to make a road is to place jelly beans that look like rocks over the frosting and make speed limit signs along the road. One sign for each birthday and the final sign is how old the person is.

Some other over the hill birthday cakes that you can make would be graveyard scenes. This can be done several different ways. You can make a flat sheet cake and use frosting to make the tombstones and graves. Write the birthday person's name on the tombstone along with other famous people. Another idea for a graveyard scene for an over the hill birthday cake is to make the cake into an actual tombstone shape. Bake a normal cake in a 9x13 pan and cut out the one end of the corners to resemble a tombstone. Decorate the over the hill birthday cake with frosting and write the birthday person's name on the cake. You can also add a cute saying and the age they are turning.

The last idea for over the hill birthday cakes is to just make one big hill for the cake. This would require your to buy special cake pans that allow you to make two cakes that look like mounds. You can find these cake pans at cake decorating stores and craft stores. Trim the two cakes so that they fit together to form a big hill. Frost them together so that are stable. You may have to use cake dowels or wooden sticks for extra support. Use a brown or green frosting to make the over the hill cake look like an actual hill. Pipe frosting along the sides of the cake to write Happy Birthday and whatever else you want on the cake. Purchase candles from the store that say how old the person is and place on the top of the hill.

When making over the hill birthday cakes, make sure that you personalize them. Personalized birthday cakes always make the most memorable cakes. If the birthday person is into fishing or traveling, you can incorporate that into your over the hill birthday cake. You don't need to be a professional cake decorator to make these cakes. It just takes some patience and some creativity.
