Ideas for Paper Crafts: The Baby Shower Invitation

Pam Gaulin
One of the greatest gifts you can give new parents, on top of the baby shower, is homemade baby shower invitations, using the skills you have with paper crafts.

Even if you are new to paper crafts, you can create a free baby shower invitation. This paper crafts article for making baby shower invitations covers paper selection, paper color, and design.

Paper Crafts: Selecting the Paper for the Invitation

If cutting paper is not your specialty, because even with a cutter you cannot seem to get the edges straight, you have a couple of options.

From a paper crafts store or paper crafts aisle at a store like Michael's, find the pre-cut blank cards and envelopes. You can select watercolor paper or more traditional card stock. This is not the cheapest option, but it can save you time and frustration if you are worried about straight edges.

Another way to incorporate your not so straight edges into the baby shower invitation is to simply give into the creative edging of paper crafts, and make some organic and unique designs on the edges of each baby shower invitation. Start with some card stock, fold it in half, and start cutting.

These edges can be cut into the paper with regular scissors, or, to make life even easier, with Decoredge scissors.

Another decision to make when selecting the paper for the baby shower invitation is color. While the gender of the baby may be known, that does not mean you are married to using a blue or pink paper. In fact, using a more neutral off-white paper for the main baby shower invitation lends itself to more colors and decorative ideas.

Paper Crafts: Designs for the Invitation

One way to design some delicate and sweet baby shower invitations is to purchase a couple of rubber stamps. The rubber stamp can be a traditional image of a baby, a baby carriage, a stork, a footprint, or a safety pin.

Also purchase a couple of smaller stamps that can be incorporated into the design. Use the rubber stamps with colorful inks to create the baby shower invitations. The best part of paper crafts is that the invitations an all be unique.

Start with a basic design, with one large stamp on the front of the card. The main image can be centered, or placed in one of the corners.

The large image in this paper craft can be repeated, or repeated and inversed. Stamp one on the bottom right corner, turn the card upside down and stamp it again.

Use smaller stamps to repeat an image up to three times.

You could choose to use letter stamps also on the front of the baby shower invitations. The trick is to use one, simple provocative word. You don't have to spend your time lining up all the letters to spell "baby shower." One of these simple words or short phrases will suffice and get the same idea across:

baby
joy!
birth!
girl
sweetpea
new life
tiny feet
angel
boy
sweet

Paper Crafts: Inside the Invitation

While one or two images from the front of the card can be repeated on the inside of the baby shower invitation, the focus should be on the who, what, where, when and why. Include all pertinent information by typing it out and then printing it out using a home printer. Cut out the printed details and glue to the inside of the card.

Cut out a "window" from card stock paper to cover the edges of the printed information

Tip: By printing the information out and gluing it into the card, you don't risk ruining the card by making a mistake. It also ensures all invitees receive the same information about the event.

Let the cards dry and then stuff the envelopes, address, stamp and mail!

These are just some ideas for using paper crafts to create your own baby shower invitations.
