Ideas for Planning a Sunflower Themed Wedding

J. Darling
June is historically the most popular month of the year for weddings, and many summer brides and grooms choose to plan their wedding around a summer theme. Sunflowers are bright, cheerful, and are perfect to use as inspiration when planning a summer wedding, especially if your ceremony is to take place outdoors. For this color scheme you'll want to incorporate plenty of yellow and chocolate brown.

Summer Sunflower Wedding Attire
The bride can wear any white dress she chooses, but many wedding gowns now come with the option of adding a colored sash at the waist. Look for those gowns and choose a yellow or chocolate brown ribbon. The bride can carry a bouquet that incorporates sunflowers and white roses or calla lilies tied with a brown ribbon. The bouquet can also consist of only yellow flowers of various sizes and varieties. You may want to match the ribbon on the bouquet to the sash on your gown for cohesiveness. If the idea of yellow bridesmaids' gowns has both you and your attendants frightened, a chocolate brown bridal gown would be suitable for a sunflower themed wedding. There also might be a subdued shade of yellow that compliments your bridesmaids' skin tones and won't leave them feeling like Big Bird!

Summer Wedding Sunflower Themed Centerpieces and Decorations
When decorating the reception area, consider covering an arch at the entrance with sunflowers, and have tin watering cans of different sizes filled with sunflowers throughout the venue. Set the tables with white tablecloths and use bold yellow cloth napkins to add visual appeal. A simple and chic centerpiece idea would be to have square vases filled with sunflower blossoms or to float floating candles and blossoms in water. As contrast, use a variety of heights on your vases between tables. You can also use yellow or orange pillar or votive candles surrounded by sunflower blossoms as a centerpiece. Small terracotta pots or miniature tin watering cans containing sunflowers could also be used as centerpieces. As it is a summer wedding, also decorate with interesting shaped green topiaries. For evening weddings, these topiaries look stunning when soft white lights are strung on them.

Summer Wedding Sunflower Themed Cake and Cupcakes
One way to save money on the wedding cake is to have a bakery make one main single-tiered cake and then serve the guests cupcakes. Decorate a plain white cake with bright yellow sunflowers made of fondant. For the cupcakes, chocolate icing would match the color scheme perfectly. Cupcake wrappers are now available in many interesting and fun colors, such as bright yellow. Small sugar or fondant sunflowers can top each cupcake and they can be displayed on a cupcake tree.
