The 60s was a revolutionary decade filled with great music, dance and fashion. You can get many ideas for cool 60s costumes from popular culture. Here are a few ideas for costumes inspired by the psychedelic 60s.

60s Hippie Halloween Costume Ideas

A 60s hippie costume is great for either a man or a woman. The best way to make a 60s hippie Halloween costume is to use some flower power. Get an ordinary tank top or shirt with an open collar. Then add a brightly colored vest and pair of bell bottom pants with a large, loud flower print. Preferably, the vest should have a lot of colorful fringe at the hem. Wear your hair long, either very big and curly or very straight. Tie a flowered headband around your head or put some flowers in your hair. Wear a chain with a peace symbol around your neck. Make your hippie costume complete by wearing round colored sunglasses and big, bulky brown sandals.

60s Go Go Girl Halloween Costume Ideas

To make a psychedelic 60s go go girl Halloween costume, get a colorful minidress with a flower, swirl or paisley print. Add a hipster belt and tall white boots. If you like, you can also wear short white gloves and a headband or soft vinyl cap. Wear your hair straight or in loose curls and make up your face with pink lips tic, black liquid eyeliner, pale eyeshadow and lots of mascara.

60s Rock and Roll Halloween Costume Ideas

Rock and roll from the 60s can provide plenty of ideas for Halloween costumes. If you know how to sew well, you can improvise with a McCall 4745 Civil War uniform pattern to make a 60s Beatles' Sergeant Pepper rock and roll costume. There are also websites that sell nineteenth century British army uniform patterns which resemble the Sergeant Pepper costume jacket. If you can't find anything that fits the bill, just look for a military frock coat sewing pattern to use as a basis for your costume. The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper costumes were made from shiny satin fabric in colors of pink, green, blue and salmon. They had a high band collar, decorative braid on the sleeves, epaulettes on the shoulder, stripe trim on the front and lanyards connecting the epaulettes to the front of the jacket. You can find a detailed costume analysis and lots of pictures of the Sergeant Pepper costume at the CostumersGuide.com website.

Jimi Hendrix is another popular 60s rock and roll costume. Get a navy blue marching band jacket with gold trim. Also find some bell bottom jeans or long pants with gold and brown vertical stripes. Wear the jacket open without a shirt underneath. Tie a scarf around your neck or wear a gold-colored chain with a large medallion pendant. If your hair doesn't look like Jimi Hendrix's hair, get a large messy afro wig. Tie a colorful scarf around your head. Another idea for a Jimi Hendrix costume is to dress in a tie dye shirt. Tie a matching scarf around the head. If you like, you make a Jimi Hendrix hat instead. Get a wide-brimmed black derby-style hat, tie a purple scarf around the base and place a chain with large silver-colored links over the scarf. Add a gaudy belt and an electric guitar to make your Jimi Hendrix costume complete.
