It is harvest time, the weather is cooling off and it is time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. There is so much planning that goes into the Thanksgiving meal that sometimes one forgets about the table until it is too late to do anything, but maybe run to the market for fresh cut flowers.

Fresh cut flowers are wonderful and there are many ways to display them without using the crystal vase stuck in one of the kitchen cabinets at the last minute.Creating a centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table does not have to be difficult. Dark baskets are an option that adds visual and textural appeal to the center of your table. You can purchase Styrofoam or Oasis (which is the green floral foam used to keep flowers standing upright) cut it to fit your basket and then start arranging the flowers for your centerpiece. You can create arrangements out of many different colored flowers; different types of lilies, a variety of tropical flowers like orchids or hibiscus, sunflowers and many fall colored stalks like wheat along with colored tree branches. Spider mums also would add an extra flare to your centerpiece when combined with the contrasting colors and are inexpensive to purchase. The colors of autumn come alive in this centerpiece. Most of the flowers mentioned can easily be found at the market, usually in already made bouquets.

Decorating the Thanksgiving dinner table can be as simple as piling fresh fruit or brightly colored gourds of different sizes in a crystal bowl or basket. Red apples, green apples, persimmons, pomegranates, bunches of red or green grapes are just some of the fruit that look beautiful arranged in a lovely bowl. Gourds of many sizes and colors are available also in the produce department of your local market and they look very appealing to the eye when arranged in some type of basket; i.e., Cornucopia.

Candles arranged with fresh and beaded fruits can be the center of attention and focus of your holiday table as well. Candles make a very inexpensive table centerpiece but can make a very attractive arrangement. Arrange them alone; cluster the candles together with the largest in the middle and scale down in a varying level. These can be arranged on a variety of platforms or plates. This centerpiece will beautifully illuminate your Thanksgiving table.

The fruit or gourd centerpieces can be made up several days before the big dinner, as well as the candle arrangements. The flower arrangements can be planned ahead of time and the basket readied in advance, too, but the flowers will have to wait until a day or two before.

After all the planning, preparation and cooking for the big day, sitting down to a beautifully set and decorated Thanksgiving dinner table will add to the thankfulness you feel on this special occasion.
