Observe the parents at your surrounding, some are very strict till the point of being embarrassingly overwhelming while some and extremely lenient and casual while there some are a mix of strict and lenient. It is obviously reflect on the character of the parents but many of the parents do not realize this. Let¡¯s study the general parenting styles and see you fall under which category.
Are you an indulgent parent? Indulgent parents are responsive but not demanding. Lenient, self regulation and avoid confrontation belong to an indulgent parent. Indulgent parents generally can be divided into two types, democratic and permissive. Democratic parents are lenient, more conscientious and put a lot of commitment to the child whereas permissive parents are immature and basically acting not as a parent. Permissive parents are portrayed as a little mythical and a little bit out from the world of reality. But if certain aspects are incorporated into this style then maybe it could result in positive parenting.
The total opposite to indulgent is an authoritarian parent. Are you a highly demanding and directive like a commander and do not explain orders, have clearly stated rules to follow and want a total obedience without any question kid. Usually, authoritarian parent want their children to accept parent judgments and have a well-ordered and structural environment of parenting. It is exactly the same like the children living in the commander school where they can only say ¡°yes¡± to everything.
Authoritative parenting style comprises both the character of indulgent and authoritarian parenting styles. Authoritative parents are demanding but responsive. They apply a clear standard for their child to conduct but the disciplinary methods they use are supportive rather than punitive. Give and take belongs to authoritative parenting style and they accept question and offer explanation. Authoritative parent develop self-confidence child, adaptable to social skills, responsible, cooperative and self regulated children.
Lastly, a different parenting style is uninvolved parenting style. Uninvolved parents are low in respond and demand and they are more on to rejection and neglecting their children. They got no attachment with their children and they seem to have no responsibility on their children. This type of parent seems to be left out from their kids and they need to make some improvement to be more conscientious in their parenting skills.
After understanding the parenting styles, every parent wish to become an authoritative parent right? But this parenting style develops naturally from your living values, practices and behaviors. Do not blame yourself for not being able to become the best parent. As long as you realize which type of parent you are, you can always practice and instill the element which are insufficient depend on which type of parenting style you are.
