Identifying Bird Species: 3 Tips that Make it Easier

Links with Survival?

Dan Reveal
With literally thousands of bird species in the world, the goal of identifying birds can seem to be a daunting prospect.

But, while you may never be able to memorize all the great variety of birds, there are 3 tips that can make bird identification easier.

Tip #1 Consider Location

You are probably not going to see a sea gull in Indiana, for example. But if you did, wouldn't you immediately be able to identify it?

The emphasis on location is important in identifying bird species because this location is a way of narrowing the focus among likely species of birds.

This means that you are going to be able to identify bird species in those obvious places they are found. It also means, however, that you are more likely to notice bird species in areas they are not usually found.

An eagle flying down your neighborhood street would certainly get your attention.

Tip #2 Look for Specific Behaviors

Another tip for identifying bird species is to look for behaviors which are unique to particular birds.

Do you see them eating certain foods? How high do they fly?

Identifying bird species becomes easier when you understand how the behavior of birds is linked to their survival. Like other creatures, birds don't behave in random ways.

They fly high in the sky, for example, to either look for food or to avoid predators.

Tip #3 Look for Specific Physical Features

A final tip for identifying bird species is to look for specific physical features.

The focus on the physical features of bird species is closely related to the behavior of birds since they both have to do with survival.

Does the bird have a sharp bill, for example? This kind of physical feature would imply that this bird eats meat and is therefore of a certain species.

If two birds are about the same size, wouldn't the colors and markings on their feathers offer you additional clues as to which bird species you are witnessing?

In sum, because there are literally thousands of bird species in the world, you may never be able to memorize all of them by sight.

By narrowing your focus about which bird species you are most likely to find in certain areas, however, as well as knowing the features which aid in the bird's survival, you will find that identifying bird species will become easier.
