Rebirth

Maricia D. C. Johns
As the sun begins to set and his head hangs low, Tobias looks down through tired, weary eyes to see the beautiful River Niger in all her glory flowing below him.

Her sensuous slow moving curves move to the rhythm of the drum that beats in his head.

The magic of his memory allows him to see the people of his village as they scurry to feel the coolness of the water that the River Niger has given birth to.

Tobias doesn't ever remember climbing this far up the cliffs of his village. The villagers are singing something that is unfamiliar to him.

A stinging sensation hits his back but he is unable to move his hands to the spot.

He hears his mother call out "Akeba!!" She moans and calls again "A-K-E-B-A!!"

As his eyes begin to focus, he knows that the River Niger is only in his memory.

He watches the ants scurry to the River of His Blood as Old Captain continues to whip his skin that does not feel anymore.

The songs of his people are the cries that Akeba will die today.

From this day forth, Akeba will be known as Tobias.
