Identity theft has become the leading crime in the USA; it has surpassed the world drug trade. You don't have to be rich to be a target; this is an equal opportunity crime. It matters not you age, sex , race or your gender and 1 in 10 will fall victim to this ruthless crime. There are 5 main areas of IDT, financial, driver's license, social security, medical and character. Medical begin the leading and main theft.
Times are hard and thieves are desperate. It is not hard to perpetrate the crime and the experts claim anyone with a computer can steal someone else identity in less than an hour. All it takes is snippets of information and the identity thief can open a bank account, get a credit card and take out a loan, all which can be done with the anonymity of a personal computer. It is with ease now that identity thieves can buy and sell stolen identity which includes social security numbers, stolen credit cards and driver's licenses numbers. There are so many ways that thieves are obtaining individual's identifying information it can be hard to keep track of.
Mail Hijacking: Stealing information via mail boxes; re approve credit cards, bank statements, insurance information and other important information.
Trash Taking; thieves are now scouring through the trash find personal info. Applications thrown out can now be use by an imposer to acquire a credit card, by changing the name and address of the victim and have sent to another address.
High-tech Market; There are now INTERNET markets where it is possible to purchase, social security cards, birth certificates and drivers license. It is very easy to find these websites that promises, "So good you'll think it's the real thing"
Who's over your shoulder? While you are busy at the ATM someone could be looking over your shoulder for your pin number. Be cautious with passwords and pin numbers. Never write numbers down, retain them in you head .Identity protection is very necessary today, there are stories about identity theft and personal data loss that are in the news all the time. We hear stories of companies loosing thousand if not millions of consumer data so frequently it's hard to keep up. But the identity resource center has been keeping up. In 2007 they were more than 447 data infiltrated and more 127 million person information was at risk.
