The number one action that you can take to prevent some from using your identity is to never give out your personal information to just anyone. Personal information includes your address, social security number, bank account routing and account numbers, or even full name! Putting any one of those pieces of information or a combination of them into the wrong hands could spell disaster for you! Who should you give it out to then? The obvious answer to that is that the only people that you need to give that type of information to is those who you are doing business with. For example, making a purchase from an online store would warrant giving out your personal information.
There are several scams, in fact, that you need to be on the lookout for in order to protect yourself. The first is a famous scam all over the world, commonly called the Nigeria Money Scam. Of course, it has many titles and even may take many different forms; however, the basic process is the same and you should be on the lookout! A person will get in touch with you telling you that he or she is a foreigner from another country who has a large sum of money to give to you because you were the beneficiary from a person's Last Will and Testament. This scenario is only a scam and will not only result in you paying out money, but also will involve you giving out your name as well as your address and bank account information to the person. Other scams that involve the disclosure of personal information include lottery scams where you have been told that you have won the lottery of another country, as well as suspicious business deals that random people approach you with that will sound like you are getting the better end of the deal. However, one should not give in to any of these scams because that is all they are: scams!
There are a few other preventive measures that one could take to prevent his or her identity from being stolen. The first is to never leave anything that has personal information on it out in the open in your automobile. This would include such things as a checkbook or even an address book. If you must leave these things in your car, cover them up on the floor in the back seat so they are concealed. Even a crook would not pass up the opportunity to look in car windows if he or she sees something that may be valuable information. Another preventative measure that one could take is to remove all receipts from any ATM that he or she uses throughout the day. You may not think that your bank account number can be found out because of the asterisks that supposedly hide your account number on the slips of receipt that prints out. Unfortunately, that receipt in the hands of someone who has the proper tools can easily find out your bank account number to drain all the money from your personal bank account!
Although there are many other ways to be sure that you are well protected, these are some of the most basic steps that one can take in order for their own identity to be kept safe! Being safe and protected means not falling for any Nigerian Scam, removing all personal information from your automobile and the ATM, and only giving out your personal information to the most necessary of people and businesses. All of those things will ensure that you will be able to enjoy lifelong years with your own identity: what a concept!
