Idol Makes History

Sherrill Fulghum
As another week of "American Idol" came to an end, history was made!

For the past two weeks the performances shows have gone overtime. In an effort to help eliminate the problem not all of the judges had the opportunity to speak; a few did so on the results show. On Danny's performance of "Endless Love" Randy said that Danny worked it out and did his thing. Simon told Kris that his performance of "Falling Slowly" was brilliant.

After the heated discussion at the end of the show Ryan asked Lil Rounds is she felt that she couldn't win no matter what song she sang. Lil's response was yes.

And when it came to Simon's remarks about Adam's rendition of "Born to Be Wild" he likened it to the "Rocky Horror Picture Show". When asked his thoughts on the remarks Adam laughed and said it was a great movie and that he didn't view the remark as an insult. When Adam asked Simon if it was meant as an insult Simon said no.

The bottom three of Anoop Desai, Lil Rounds, and Matt Giraud was selected around performances by "American Idol" alum Jennifer Hudson who sang "If This is Love" and Miley Cyrus who sang "The Climb" from her movie "Hannah Montanah: The Movie". Hudson is the only "American Idol" contestant to win an Academy Award, which she received for her performance in the film "Dreamgirls".

Anoop found himself in the bottom three for the third week in a row; but when his share of the over 36 million votes were counted, Anoop's fans had saved him once again.

This left Lil and Matt as the bottom two. Before a break Ryan Seacrest asked Simon whether or not the save might be used for the first time this season. In typical Simon behaviour he stated that there was one whom they might consider - we've heard that before. Simon added that it might come as a surprise to that person. Ryan asked if that person was Lil, but Simon only said they'd have to wait and see.

The singer who found that they would be singing for their "American Idol" lives was Matt Giraud. As he sang "Have You Really Ever Loved a Woman" minus the piano this time the judge conferred. At the conclusion of the song Simon said that it wasn't as good as the first performance and that he didn't think Matt had any real chance of winning the competition. His remarks led everyone, including Matt, thinking Matt was headed for home.

They were wrong!

Matt Giraud made "American Idol" history as the first contestant to be saved from elimination. As Matt's eyes filled with tears and his fellow Idols hugged him Simon announced that he had two pieces of bad news, the first was that next week two Idols would go home and the second was that the theme for next week's show is Disco Music.

Wonder who will attempt the Gloria Gayner hit "I Will Survive"?
