If Diabetes is an Epidemic, so is Healthcare

Myra Smith
We've seen the numbers. We've been drilled with the statistics. Diabetes is an epidemic and Heart Disease is a number one killer. Are people dying because they are too sick? Are they too sick because they don't take care of themselves properly? Or could it be that they just can't afford to live? Having no healthcare coverage means you can not afford the best treatments that could possibly cure you and give you a better chance of survival, the other option is you can take a bunch of medicine that will help you get through it for sometime. Then you will have to be billed for what your insurance, if any won't cover. So now you are left with sickness and debt. Now you're stressed and stress is a huge factor in heart disease. So is the diseases the epidemic or the lack of healthcare coverage? Too many people are faced with the dilemma of not being able to afford treatment and therefore are unable to take care of themselves and usually avoid doing so because they know they will end up stuck with bills, denied treatment, and will eventually get worse.

Thousands of people either have little or no coverage. With all the issues we are faced with that are causing lifelong health issues, health care is more like life insurance, or shall I say life assurance. If you don't have any medical there is a higher chance that you are going to suffer and then die from an illness. Good luck keeping a healthy smile if you have no coverage. God forbid if you have a mental illness and no coverage. What happened to life preservation? It seems like there is more value in dying than in living. Whenever there is talk about sickness and disease there is more discussion on how many people are ill and what the top killers are. There is hardly ever any talk about the lack of coverage, the lack of treatments, and the lack of awareness. There is more advertisement for the things that affect our health such as fast food and eating out as opposed to prevention. Trying to eat right to be healthy is very expensive. A baked chicken dinner will cost you almost ten dollars but at McDonalds you can get an entire meal for fewer than 5 dollars. There are essential things in life that we require and should not be denied air, water, food, and healthcare. When you are denied any of theses essential you are cutting your life span short.

We need to get our priorities in order. We've become more indulged in creating new drugs for sickness and disease, than prevention and treatment. Drug and pharmaceutical companies are profiting while millions of people are suffering and dying. When you enter into this world you ought to be entitled to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and healthcare coverage.
