If This Doesn't Convince You to Compare Unit Size when Shopping, Nothing Will!
A True Story that Proves Comparing Unit Size and Prices is an Absolute Must!
The first jar I spotted of this particular type was tall and skinny. With a price tag of $4.77. My first thought was "Wow, olives sure are getting expensive!" Ever searching for a deal, I glanced over the other shelves of olives.
There, on the shelf directly above, was a short and fat jar of the exact same type of olives. Its price tag was only $2.77. Bells dinged in my head. I picked up the short, fat jar and read the unit size - 7 oz. What was the unit size of the tall, skinny jar? 7 ounces.
Yes, they were both the exact same olive, exact same brand, exact same unit size, just different shaped jars with different prices! This totally blew my mind, but of course I bought the short, fat jar for $2 less.
I thought that this may have been a fluke. Perhaps the brand was in the process of shrinking quantity size but the stock on the shelves had not caught up yet. Lo and behold, I went shopping for a jar of olives last week and found the situation to be the same. Both types of jars were still there and they both had their prices as before.
This true story should tell you, that you really must compare the unit sizes and prices. If you don't you could be paying a lot more than you need to!

Post a CommentThanks for the tips Allana. I try to comparison shop too. I love green olives and they do seem to be getting expensive. I've been watching very carefully when I buy something and this is another good point to consider at the grocery store. Thanks for sharing. Please pass along any tips for saving at the grocery store that you may have. I have a big family and try to keep my pantry full with sale goods.
Holy Moly! What an eye-opener! Thanks!
Good writing and good shopping!
Can you just do all my grocery shopping for me :). Great review and good advice.
Great reminder. Take pop, 16 0z bottles are usually twice as much as 2 liters>
good eye! yeah, I always compare too...it's saved me tons!
I'm always comparing. You really have to watch the containers of fresh fruit. Sometimes you can get more for the large container at $4.99 than those being sold for 2 for $5.
I think it's such a good idea to check unit price..:) Wonderful work!
Good catch, seems like companies are trying to trick us at every turn.
