If You Enjoy Eating Garbage, Try Freeganism

Kelly Karrington
How far would you go to voice your political views? Would you shoplift and eat garbage? A group of people, calling themselves "Freegans," are pressing their political agenda by living an almost hobo lifestyle. Freegan stands for a combination of "free" and "vegan." So, basically, some strain of new-wave hippie. By the way, I do think that it is odd that they are gung-ho about living off of other people's land and not buying anything, yet they have a number of websites (such as http://freegan.info). I am a bit surprised that they are not selling t-shirts.

Mostly middle class, these social-libertarians (anarchists) are protesting capitalism. They dumpster-dive for food and clothing, rely on handouts from people, and even shoplift. In fact, swindling as much money as possible from stores and employees seems to be a top issue for them; one can only assume that this is yet another way for them to get back at the capitalist establishment. A question begs to be answered, however: do they stick to corporations and large chain stores, or do they also pillage mom-and-pop stores? I also noticed that they like to proudly refer to their "guerilla gardening." It is great to see that they are fighting a war on someone's hard-worked land. And another thing, about these ridiculous anarchists-they may think that anarchy is the solution to our problems, but they would rethink it all once the police weren't around to protect them anymore. They may be able to protect themselves from each other, but good luck going against some hardened criminal with a grudge against loud-mouthed socialists.

This makes me long for the days when hippies would hold hands, lay down, and attempt to stop the traffic flow on major highways. Seriously, can't these people get jobs? The sad thing is that I just know that some of these people are parents, and they are probably leading their children down the path to a life of living in a cardboard box-how many people forced to live that life would love to switch with a middle class lifestyle? If these people truly cared about the plight of the suffering, they would do something more active than eating a grocery store's discarded produce. I will only be satisfied with them if they recruit Cindy Sheehan, as I would love for her to eat some trash. You are what you eat, right?

it matters to me because when you support starbucks, walmart, and other evil corporations, they succeed, and take over more and more of our capitalist society.
also, it matters to me that you own a car, because that is polluting OUR earth. i don't drive. i have a bike, and i use public trasportation.
i'm not saying that you have to go dumpstering. what i'm saying is what does it matter to you?
and what gives you the right to choose what normal is?
and i have a job teaching others, and i go to school. i would just rather that instead of things going to waste, that they be used.

I know I'm the "problem" because I want to live life like a normal person, and not depend on whatever people throw into their trash..I want to work and try to live my life the way that I want to (that includes having a house, a CAR, and real food) all by spending my own money. In the same vein--what does it matter to YOU if I would rather spend my time supporting a capitalist society than living on a commune? Get a life.

Yeah, why waste my time..I mean, people like you are stealing moldy food and mooching off of the government while the rest of us evil bastards are holding down jobs. :) Have a great day.

you're the basis of the consumer bullshit that 'freegans' are fighting against.... your life plan is to own a car..... don't you think it would be better to hope for something more.... like changing the world, or to live life without harming the rest of the planet? so what if some kids get their food from the garbage? what does it matter to you?
it clearly doesn't effect your life, so why waste your time? i mean, i guess it doesn't really matter, because the other stuff you spend your time on is teaching others 'how to straighten their hair like a pro!'.

I think I'll stick with my current lifestyle!
