If Half so Fair a Love

A Shakespearean Sonnet

Doug Clore
If half so fair a love on earth did dwell,
As dwells within this twice torn heart I bear,
No power known to man could ever quell
Her beauty's bondage, singularly rare.
Oh Cursed love, thou art no friend of mine
Oh wretched man, that walkest thus alone
Enchanted by her magic spells divine
Enraptured by a presence all her own.
My secret love longs fiercely to be known,
As if by standing forth, a victory's won.
Yet somehow knows when known it will succumb,
By light of day its light will be undone.
But glimpsed by half, while evening shadows fall,
My lonely love is standing proud and tall.
