While not everyone will hit it big like Rowling has, her story should be an inspiration to all work-at-home moms that if you have a great work in you to write, you can write it and it can bring you financial success. As a work-at-home project, writing a book may be one of the most satisfying types of work there is. It is a project you can work on using your home computer during those times when the kids are at school or otherwise occupied. And when you are done and you have a well-crafted book that is the result of your hard work, you will have produced something to be proud of and a product to be marketed that can bring in steady revenue for a long time to come.
There is an up and a down side to the financial aspect of writing a book as your home based business. The up side is once your book is published, you receive royalty checks for as long as the book continues to sell. So if your book finds an audience and continues to enjoy popularity, you can see a steady income from just one book for many years. If you can use that income to keep your family finances moving along, you have time to write a second book and then a third. And each one can then go out there and become an income generator for you.
The down side is it is tricky to get started. For one thing, it takes anywhere from a couple months to years to write a novel. So during that time, if you have a need for steady income, you may have to take some shorter term jobs to keep the bills paid while you work on your novel the rest of the time. It is possible to get a publisher to give you an advance to write your book. To do that, write a short passage of the book as well as the proposed table of contents and a proposal including who the audience of the book will be and a synopsis of the plot.
You can go on the web sites of the publishers who deal in your kind of work to find out the exact submission process. To be safe, submit your proposal to several publishers at once to increase your chances of finding a sponsor to underwrite your expenses as you write your book.
Writing is a discipline that will take some getting used to. While it might seem that sitting at your computer writing all day will be easy, you only have to read comments by established writers that it can be hard to stay at it. But with the goal of producing the next great Harry Potter or at least a book that you will be proud of and that will make good money for you, it's a noble cause and a worthwhile home business for you. Even if you don't get a three picture movie deal from your book, its great to have a job where you can work at home, take great care of your kids and be able to tell people "I am a writer" when they ask what you do.
