I purchased the soda not really knowing what to expect.
Honestly I had never heard of birch beer before and I wasn't sure if it was an alcoholic drink or not.
The drink was not in the root beer cooler so I figured it had to be somewhat different.
So once again I asked a coworker to sample the taste with me.
A pop of the cap revealed a fizzing sound. After pouring a sample in a cup, a sort of pink color beverage appeared.
We then sampled. My coworker instantly grimaced and refused to drink anymore.
I continued to drink trying to place a name with the taste.
After a couple more drinks, memories of Creomulsion Cough Medicine came to mind.
My coworker instantly agreed. The difference is I developed a taste for Creomulsion and she didn't.
Therefore I decided I could stomach the birch beer.
I wish I had been suffering from a cough, then I would know if the drink doubles as a cough suppressant.
A check of the company's Web site shows that the soda is a favorite in the northeast. The taste is described as "a kick of wintergreen flavor."
Not sure I got the wintergreen taste.
The brew is created in Philadelphia and is sold in over 40 states.
The drink is low in sodium and caffeine free. The company also claims to use premium ingredients.
Marketing wise, the bottle has an attractive appearance that collectors might like.
Other flavors in the gourmet line listed are: Root Beer, Diet Root Beer, Wishniak Black Cherry, Orange Cream and Vanilla Cream.
My overall analysis is the taste is tolerable, especially if you like Creomulsion.
Even if your not a fan of the cough medicine, it is a taste that is tolerable.
In a must drink situation I could do it.
However, I'm not sure that it will make the buy again list unless I become a bottle collector.
My coworker strongly disagrees with the tolerable comment and stresses the drink will never be on her purchase list.
Despite the fact that I'm not a true fan of this flavor, I will take a look at Hank's other flavors and give them a try.
Until then, those in the northeast enjoy your birch beer.
