Alfalfa is an herb. Its scientific name is medicago sativa. Because its roots grow so deeply in the soil, it is known for the ability to draw nitrogen from the earth and store it within its stem.

Alfalfa is known as an alkalizing herb for the body. This means that it will counteract the effect of acid within the body. Known acidic conditions in the body are sour stomach, hyper-acidic stomach and arthritis. Sometimes when individuals undertake a vegetarian diet, too much acid is produced as well. Alfalfa can help with this condition.

Many people that enjoy pasta or bread suffer from highly acidic conditions in the stomach. Even enjoying good carbohydrates can cause this condition. Alfalfa tea causes the body to produce more saliva. This saliva further contributes to the breakdown of starches in the mouth before the starch can reach any other area of the body.

Alfalfa also contains amino acids that are similar in composition to animal proteins. Because of this, Alfalfa can aid in the breakdown of hard to digest animal protein debris. Many children and adults suffer from food allergies because they lack the proper amino acids their body can use to breakdown and properly digest their food. Alfalfa is beneficial for both children and adults in this capacity.

Because Alfalfa is so deeply rooted in the soil, it contains vitamins A, B, and C. It is also high in alkalizing salts.

Much talk has been undertaken recently about the acidic condition of the American diet being the cause of many ailments in the body. In this way, Alfalfa can be helpful in bringing the body back into the proper pH balance and avoiding an acidic condition that can bring strain on the body's systems.

Even if an individual does not intentionally eat a lot of starch, but would describe their eating habits as the typically American--ex. Pizza on Friday, sandwiches 4 or 5 times a week, rice with a few meals and chips once or twice a week, alcoholic beverages 1 or more times a week--then chances are that your body is in what is considered a mildly to highly acidic state.

The body that exists in a highly acidic state will cause its internal systems to steal the necessary minerals needed for bodily functioning (such as magnesium, sodium calcium etc.) from vital organs. In doing this the body is attempting to neutralize the acid and expel it from the body. This process is strenuous on the body and over a period of time this condition will cause noticeable damage to the body's systems. Mild acidosis has been known to cause the following problems over time:

Cardiovascular damage
Weight gain, obesity, adult diabetes
Kidney and bladder conditions like kidney stones
Cancer
Hormonal imbalance
Premature aging
Osteoporosis and brittle bones
Joint pain, arthritis, aching muscles
Gastric and lactic acid build up
Low energy, extreme fatigue
Slow digestion and constipation
Yeast infections and fungal overgrowth

Continued use of Alfalfa tea can help balance out the pH in the standard American diet. Though some carbs are amazingly good for you and should not be avoided altogether; it is important to keep the body in a healthy alkaline state in order for the systems to function properly. I recommend drinking Alfalfa tea as opposed to taking a supplement.
