How to Make This Christmas Affordable for Kids

Jenia Silver
As holiday gift giving seasons starts soon, families with small budgets may need to begin planning early this year. As every one young and old enjoys Christmas, it is the children who look forward to Santa Claus. Of course this means toys and goodies with gum-drops and lollipops. As many Americans have lost jobs, reduced incomes and had large financial adjustments buying toys may now come second. So, here are few suggestive ways to manage your kids holiday gifts.

Buy on layaway

These programs at retailers are coming back this year. Store which did not offer this service before, have been changing their policies to accommodate hard times. Simply pick the items to buy, but pay little by little. Each week or two weeks give a portion of the total of the charge to the store. With Christmas still more than a month away, this is still a spending option.

Thrift store shopping

Buying a used gift is not the only thing one will find nowadays at these stores. If looking for large ticket merchandise, this could be beneficial. Some previously owned assortments are not bed to buy again. Also, new packaged toys can be found at a cheaper rate here. Some charity store make arrangements to receive shipments of overstocked toys like: wooden train sets, cars, dolls, and stuffed animals.

Pawn stores sell for lesser prices

A good retailer of electronics, bikes, jewelry and musical instruments is always a pawn dealer. As previously sold property profit's the owner, the pawn store only sell it back to the public for a profit. One year I was able to get a bargain on a TV, DVD player, and digital camera all for a hundred bucks. Even though the store had higher marked price tags on the items selling them separately. So, bargain hunters can make a good deal, and save money.

Gift cards, and the day after Christmas

Tight budgets may pay off during sale days. The day after the holiday is when the biggest sales of the seasons go on. Gift packages of all kinds are slashed from 50 to 75 percent off through out the next week. So, if you buy a gift card at your kids favorite store, take them along to pick their presents on the 26th to the 31st of December.

Warehouse retailers like Wal-Mart

While Wal-mart is the biggest competing retailer others also provide holiday discount. Because the retailers produce and package their own labels gift items are often stocked before Thanksgiving. Ranging from cosmetics sets for young girls to small play instrument, gifts can be bought starting at five dollars and up.

Dollar Stores

Does the lowest amount possible for anything sound good? Sometimes it is. Stocking stuffers are the most common purchase here. But don't give up just yet on finding special gifts. Games and hobby crafts are usually for sale at dollar stores. I know that at the 99cent store in Las Vegas last year I bought a child's plastic bowling set for just that price, 99 cents plus tax.

Angel Trees. and the day after

Most major cities give the chance for low-income families to sign-up their children for a donated toy . Then, trees with the requested items are all over shopping malls. However, some requests are left blank. That is because the non-profit organization intends on giving to additional recipients which did not make the deadline to register. So, if it too late to ask for the toys your kids want, and you qualify, be sure to call and ask what day the left over donations can be picked up. The week of Christmas is likely to be the date of the free toy give away.

Free picture with Santa

Getting the picture with Santa is a great tradition. I, myself, grew-up each year awaiting to sit on the lap of the mall Santa and visit with the elves. This can be an expensive venture all on it's own. So get one for free at the Bass Pro Shop. That's right the first print is made on the spot for free, and the upgraded accessories and prints are at cost.

Ask, and you shall receive; also some say it's free

Internet sites are now making features on the act of giving 365 days a year. Sites like Caigslist and Donations.com are on line to look for what's for free and ask as well. Buy making a free user profile you browse the free section the classifieds or list any donations you are in need. It may be the newest trend and a bit strange, but it costs nothing but your time.

Give Holiday Books, Cd's, DVDs, and more for free

As it is only borrowing it is free. Does this place sound familiar? The public library offers free memberships cards. All members can borrow from the collection and make holds on movies, music, books and anything else available. The Christmas Classics like Rudolf the red nose Reindeer, Peanuts Christmas, and Frosty the Snow man are all there somewhere. Go early to ensure the selection of your liking.
