If the Tea Party Wins, Who Loses?

Jeff Musall
If, as most pundits predict, the Tea Party (and by subjugation, the Republican Party) make big gains on November 2nd, there will be some heady days for them and their supporters. If they win, who loses?

Working Americans. Anyone who earns a paycheck the real way, who isn't a CEO or crony. Instead of a basic health care reform that we can build on, we will have corporate interests diluting it further. If allowed, the Tea types will take us backward, so our children are once again subject to existing condition denial.

They say they want their version of reform, but it's always come down to two things. Tort reform, and allowing companies to sell insurance across state lines. In other words, taking away consumer rights of recourse when malpractice happens, and making health insurance devolve further to the lowest denominator.

What about wages? They want to dismantle unions, end the minimum wage, and further strip away worker rights when it comes to attempting to organize. A question, Tea supporters, if unions are so bad, why, pray tell, are they always the hardest jobs to get?

Teabaggers want to strip away environmental regulations, saying we need to do so to remain competitive with China. Truth is, the people behind the Tea admire China. They like the idea of cheap labor that keeps quiet. They don't want environmental regulations. We cannot compete with China on the same terms unless we wish to devolve to virtually no worker rights. Trade restrictions are the way to level the field with China.

They want to dismantle separations of church and state, imagining some sort of fanciful American Christian empire. Freethinkers see the writing on the wall, and are deeply concerned. If Tea Parties win, everyone different from them loses.

Make no mistake, rabid pundits will rave tomorrow about how the people have spoken. They may even, as a frequent comment poster on my writing claims, that "70 percent of Americans agree with Tea Party principles." Of course, there is never anything to back that up, as it is completely wrong. When more Americans vote, the result is always more progressive. The far right needs voter apathy in order to win.

And gains for the right should be expected, the train wreck corporatism and trickle-down have set up will take awhile to clean up, especially with a president who was forced to cater to the right for votes. One good thing coming from a big Tea win, the Blue Dogs will be gone for the most part. Democrats remaining will be more progressive. more willing to fight. The idea that Democrats had big majorities was never a reality, Blue Dogs were just Republican light.

Moving America ahead is never a straight-line process. It's always 3 steps forward, 1 or 2 back. Be it civil rights, voting rights, improvements for workers, our National Parks, movement ahead on energy - all have come in spite of conservatives, none because of them. It will continue to be so. it's not easy. If it were, we would already have energy independence and universal health care.

But in spite of them, we do move forward. The shackles of conservatism on our feet force us to move slowly, but do not stop us. After the Republican win of 1994 Clinton actually became more progressive and assertive. Not nearly enough, mind you, but he did find a strength. Hopefully Obama will do the same.

The future Tea types want, if more of it is allowed to manifest itself, will cause thinking Americans to cry out, angry with themselves and the system for what is upon them. And we will move forward...

Well Dude, America voted!! And Rejected the progressive ideology…. No, It wasn’t because there was no Public Option in the HC… No it wasn’t because we needed to tax the rich, and redistribute wealth… need more government entitlement programs… I know you were looking to get comments that are negative – No worries, you’ll get them from your peeps!!

Tim, we need help from the South! We stayed marginally progressive up here, but the South, and the rust belt, which needs progressives the most, went red. You are right, we need real change, not to keep dancing back and forth extremes of corporatism...

Unless, of course, those Tea Party leaders are as coherent and wise as Keith, in which case I'll take Sweden.

I'm not sure it really makes any difference who wins. Change we need is not coming from this crop of particularly spineless Democrats. Maybe we need an openly fascist party leading the country for a decade to snap people out of their unconsciousness. Etither that or another World War where this time we play the Germans.

    the Country loses.

Dude really - five comments and nothing coherent? Do you seriously want to blame progressives for industry leaving?

  • Keith Bonnett11/2/2010

OK , Lets get back to industry – The production of GOODS not services BUT product!! I’m what you would call an old white guy – grew up in Detroit, moved to the :”Berbs” in the late 60’s after the riots… I have watched the down fall of this country – UNLESS WE FIGURE out how to get this country back on track… your children will only have one option …. Service !! in another language “ Hello, and thank you for calling__________ how can I be of service to you!!! It’s TIME to recognize it… AND FIGHT TO GET THIS COUTRY BACK ON TRACK……………….NO JEFF, PROGRESSIVE THINKING WILL NOT WORK!!!

  • Keith Bonnett11/2/2010

Ok, Now were going to have to work on one of the big BUNDERS of America…YES, ILLIGAL ENTRY of this country!!!! Another very complicated issue… However, one thing that erks me… Progressive’s protecting illegal (sanctuary cities) Mainly in Calif,
It will have to stop!!! We will have to have honest conversations…WITHOUT RACIST name-calling!! Obama talks about a HC system that will support 30 M people who didn’t have HC – How many of those are looking forward to the :Dream Act:” 12 M – 15M – 20 M? Yes, With the NEW TEA PARY in Congress….WHO REALLY Loose’s … THE UNINFORMED!!

  • Keith Bonnett11/1/2010

Most likely “Global Warming: will become words like groovy, the cats pajamas, and Dude!! The new REAL phrase,,,yes let’s beat them!! “ Compete in the mega trillion dollar energy industry Let’s make our own! The bottom line Jeff, When America is making money….Everyone…WINS,,, It’s time to stop the belief that Government is the end all… AND start believing in the American PEOPLE!!

  • Keith Bonnett11/1/2010

Housing prices, That is really the question!!! The actual base of the Middle Class, and a huge problem facing the next congress….Can the government control it no!!! It MUST fall in line with the wages…. How can we, as a country allow one neighbor pay the mortgage for a 250K home, while the other neighbor has not paid for 9 months, and now gets an adjusted (Government subsidized tax payer mortgage for a 150K home at 4%) Complicated…
