If There is No Disaster

There is No Such Thing as a Disaster

Dan Li
Sure, there are lots of disasters in the world. I am not sure which one would be the worst out of the whole lot of them. What do you think? What if there is no disaster...

Maybe you will say that you are scared of the earthquake, a terrible thing since it would be either the worst way of dying, or the worst way of living. Those who die would leave a lot of pains and sorrows for others. Those who live may lose their houses and relations...It is really hard to mention it or to talk about it. If there is no earthquake...

Some people are afraid of diseases, which even make the patients lifeless! Better dead, they say, than suffering like that. It is painful to be attacked by any disease. Thus I pary that you will always be healthy just keeping the doctors away!

Living standards have risen dramatically over the last decades. Nowdays, each of us live a more comfortable life without worrying the basic necessities. Some others, on the other hand, are still enslaved by poverty, which is another disaster! Some poor families even experience hunger that depress them a lot. It is said that 13% of poor families and 2.6% of poor children experience hunger at some point during the year. Thus, the world will be just awesome if there is no poverty.

But most of all I fear of war, which in my mind is much more scary than any natural disaster since it not only ruins people's lives but also will hurt their hearts. War is not just an accident like most other disasters, it is on purpose with so much hate and misunderstanding between nations, that is worse than anything the nature can throw at us. The things can be rebuilt after a war, the friendships between nations, whereas, are very hard to restore. My grandpa, for example, during the sino-Japanese war, lost his Japanese parents when he was only 6 years old. Even as he was at death's door after two days of hunger, a Chinese couple saved him...Under such an awful pressure, u know, the couple adopted the poor kid. Initially, they were too poor to raise another kid since they had already had 4 children. Also, there were implacable hatred between the two nations those days. Thus the hardest thing was they had to overcome others' prejudice though my grandpa was innocent. But they were very kind and took better care of my grandpa than their own children. However, he had had a very hard life. Being bullied by other boys who lost their parents, can you imagine that how repressed and solitary his childhood was? For I say, nothing will be tougher than a war? So, don't start a war anyway!

You can waste your life, drawing lines, or, you can live your life crossing them. But here's what I know. If you're willing to take the chance...the view from the other side is spectacular.  View profile
