Back in 2007, two United States Border Guards were prosecuted for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler. The two border guards turned themselves into police in January 2007, after being found guilty of..."Doing their job". The were trying to stop a known drug smuggler, and they are they ones prosecuted, and sitting in jail, while the drug smuggler is free somewhere south of the border. The following Saturday, one of the border guards was beaten by 5 inmates, who were illegals, shouting to him in Spanish "kill the border guard" . How wrong is this? The first time I heard of this story I was watching a cable news show, Glenn Beck. He was discussing the arrest of the two border guards. Also available, was a t-shirt which the monies went to the guards legal fees. I purchased one. The navy blue t-shirt has yellow writing on it U.S. Border Guard, with the United States picture in yellow under it, then below in smaller letters "to protect and serve time".
I wore this t-shirt one summer day. I stopped by the local hamburger joint for a ice cold cola. I walked in and stood at the counter and placed my order, I can not tell you the horror that was on the faces of two employees in the back, who looked like they were from Mexico, speaking nervously in Spanish to another. They would not take their eyes off me. I thought to myself quietly, this is sad. They may have had a green card or visa to work here, I do not know. But the question is raised as to why they were so scared. I left the restaurant and when I got into my car, I told my spouse of what happened. He thought it was comical, but it truly is not. I have a firm belief they were illegal, not properly working here in Michigan, taking a job away from a citizen who maybe could use the work to buy food or medication.
When I lived down south for almost a year, there was allot of people from Mexico living in the same county, working, but the majority did have a work visa. I sold my vehicle to a young man who saved his money, he had to go back to Mexico for 6 months because his visa expired, but was going to return when it was renewed again. I sold my house that I had there. This one bothers me, or I should say should of bothered the lender more. The person who bought it was here on a work visa ,and when that visa is up what happens to the house? Did they care? They could not speak any word of the English language but got approved for a $70,000 house.
You see it in the grocery store. A young female with a child, who can not speak any English, holding a paper of allowed foods from the state under the WIC program. I was standing in line behind her as she was confused as to the pictures of the products she was allowed to have and did not have. Now , I have meat in my cart and milk. I have to wait in line as she runs back to an cereal isle looking for the proper product? This is disturbing to me. I can understand, to a point, I did feel sorry for her, but at same time I was angry that there are resources to learn the language, and another person who maybe should not be here is straining the system for those who are legal citizens, in a already stressed state.
It is my opinion that if you wish to be a United States Citizen, please do it right; go through the channels, as a lot of our forefathers have done. They took time to learn the language and get their citizenship, worked hard, and many even opened their own businesses and gave back for what they received coming here to America. The opportunity is there, I do not understand the reasonings behind it. The economy is bad enough , people are hurting for work, and those who are willing to work can not find jobs, because illegals were hired in at a cheaper rate.Getting back to the man who bought our car down south, he explained that allot of Mexican people come to work here to make money and send it back home to family in Mexico. He said this is the reason he thinks the majority comes here and admitted it was not right if they did not have a work visa. I am sort of happy that a select few are going through the channels properly, in hopes of one day becoming citizens. The disturbing part is the ones who do not. I am not writing this to anger anyone, just wanted to share an experience I had by wearing a simple T-shirt.
