The idea is simple, you type your first name in the designated box, or not, it's optional, and then type your last name into the second box, that parts required, and then type in your current state of residence. Make sure you click on the little magnifying glass, tabbing along will move your selection to the "Terms of Service" choice and you'll have to start over. If you decide to type your information into all three boxes, be detailed, it will help narrow down the sites abundant list of names. Also, if you've married or have had other last names type those in as well. You'll soon find out how many people have your same name, just a conscience reminder.
Once you've typed in your name and state, a list of about 1-25 items will show up on the first page. There are sometimes at least 200+ names to check through, so if your last name is Smith or Rogers or another common surname it may take a while to search through the results. But if you do find your name a loud "Yahoo!" will ease the pain of sifting through a bunch of long lost relatives. The states where your name is listed are in alphabetical order so if you've only lived in WA or WY skip past the states that begin with A-V. If you've lived in a bunch of states check the addresses or company's name that's reporting the funds. Even if you've lived there a short time funds may be available.

MissingMoney.com works with state governments to help people locate funds they may not be aware of; this site may become as popular as your favorite search engine or e-mail choice. They are always updating the list of names and unclaimed funds so bookmark the site today and check it monthly.
I searched for my name, and since it's a common last name I had to look at a few hundred searches while I paged through the choices. No luck for me, but I did search my wife's last name, maiden and married. Well, fair maiden has some funds that she gets to collect. I married well! We sent off for the necessary paperwork and a general claim form arrived in the mail from the treasurer of that state. There does seem to be some bureaucracy involved in receiving your funds but a little red tape at the end of the finish line can't be so bad.

Post a CommentI just checked mine, no cash for me but I did have a search result from the .gov site a few months back. It took them about 10 weeks to process the check and mail it to me.
Great site! I never knew about it. Unfortunately, I have no money waiting to be claimed, but I DID find an old paycheck for my boyfriend he never cashed and hopefully he can get that money (and I'll make him give me a finder's fee -- JK!). THANKS!
