Pope Benedict XVI, during a visit to Fatima in Portugal, said that same-sex marriage and abortion were among the "most insidious and dangerous challenges that today confront the common good." After which he proceeded to praise anti-abortion campaigners and pro-life advocates who defend the right to life.
Wow! People who love each other are dangerous and a threat because they are of the same gender? And women who chose not to bring a child into a world filled with war, hunger, and poverty are dangerous too? I think there are far worse threats to human kind out there like global warming, deforestation, poverty, hunger, a lack of clean water to everyone who needs it, and war's that tear nations apart. Oh wait, nope it must be those gay guys and gals that want to marry each other. Yeah, that's what it is most threatening to the common good. And for the record, those anti-abortion campaigners and pro-life advocates that were praised by the Pope happen to have 8 murders, 17 attempted murders, 328 death threats, and 153 incidents of assault and battery under their belts. But yeah, it's the women who have chosen to have an abortion that are dangerous.
"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," said Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi an Islamic cleric said to his worshipers in Tehran.
This ignorant theory was smashed to bits when Boobquake took the internet by storm and women all over the world showed off cleavage in an attempt to prove Mr. Sedighi wrong. Mr. Sedighi was proven wrong and well earthquakes are actually caused by plate tectonics and their movement. I'd bet Mr. Sedighi believes a women should be raped if she shows too much ankle too. After all men shouldn't have to worry about controlling their own impulses or anything.
"Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH and their chins with FELLATIO KILLS."- Reverend Dr. Peter Mullen of St. Michael's Cornhill and St. Sepulchre wrote this to his followers on his internet blog way back in 2008. He also said that homosexuality was "clearly unnatural, a perversion and corruption of natural instincts and affections, and because it is a cause of fatal disease".
I report to you today that the Center for Disease Control does not list homosexuality as a cause of any sort of fatal disease nor is homosexuality listed as a disease. Some may protest and say that AIDs is a fatal disease caused by homosexuality but that is not true. AIDs is a fatal disease brought on from HIV which is passed through unsafe sex, blood transfusions and sharing of dirty needles. If you wish to say that homosexuality causes fatal diseases then so do junkies and people who have lost too much blood. As for the tattooing of people in the GLBT community I'm so appalled at the statement that I really don't know what to say.
"[S]omething happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. Napoleon the Third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, "We will serve you if you get us free from the prince." True story. And so the devil said, "OK, it's a deal." They kicked the French out, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free."- This quote was said by Pat Robertson during a television broadcast of the 700 Club just after the massive earthquakes in Haiti left thousands devastated.
Umm... really Pat? You know this because you were there right? A short history lesson for those who have read my rant this far: The Haitian Revolution started in 1791 when slaves, who were inspired by slave rebellions in the United States and British colonies, revolted. Tension had been running through the people for years before the slave revolt in 1791 drew Haiti into civil war. Men and women who had been kept as slaves fought against their oppressors for years until 1804, when Haiti was declared a free republic. I guess that story wasn't good enough for Mr. Robertson's preaching. I guess perhaps those earthquakes would not have happened had the Haitian people just stayed in their place. Oh wait, it probably would have, you know, plate tectonic science and all.
All of these religious leaders have a few things in common, they are leaders in communities, they have a large number of followers, they spew forth ignorance in their speeches and breed hate, incite fear and cause intolerance. End Rant.

Post a CommentJust have to come back months later to say THANK YOU. These are great.
A friend of mine once said after her first visit to a church, "I thought this was ORGANIZED religion?" From the mouths of babes... I enjoyed your "rant" immensely.
This is just one more reason that I prefer to have a personal relationship with God instead of involving any type of "leader" in it. Having the ability to lead does not automatically mean that they should be followed. Now please excuse me while I contact some of my friends who follow a different direction than them and ask to please knock it off so the earthquakes and God knows what other natural disasters can be avoided. Lmaoooo too much! Great article!
Ugh, religion is supposed to nurture, and instead too often it divides and isolates. Really important article.
To expand on Charlotte's comment, hatred and ignorance come from "respected" leaders of all sorts. I think some of these people actually believe these crazy things while others try to be outrageous for the publicity.
Well said, I think that Mark Souder would love to eat his words right now about abstinence, family values and morals too since it came out that the rabid right wing republican has been having an affair for 6 years, and you know whose fault it is? The government, they made him stick his willywacker where it wasn't supposed to be. The more judgemental, and overly religious the harder they fall. great article.
Great idea for an article and enlightening commentary.
Intriguing concept.
Not all religious leaders preach that kind of crap. They give Christians a bad name. Unfortunately, it is one that many on the opposite side choose to propogate in order to prove that all of us Christians are bad people. I believe that to be just as wrong. Let's face it, the Reverend Al Sharpton and the Reverend Jesse Jackson have said some pretty hateful things too but that's okay for some reason just because they are liberal. We need a balance from all sides instead of an all right or all wrong approach. Until or "if" we ever get there, nothing will ever improve across the board so that all people are treated fairly and compassionately.
I can't believe that men are still saying these things! Thank you for sharing! Great article!
